<div><span>The Centre has approved a major change to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, offering the 75 per cent of Agniveers who are not initially absorbed into the regular forces an additional two-year engagement period.</span></div><div><span>The move will extend their service from the existing four years to six years, creating a further opportunity for them to join the permanent cadre of the Armed Forces.</span></div><div><span>Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced the decision on Wednesday, describing it as a significant development for the Indian Armed Forces and Agniveers.</span></div><div><span>He said the Cabinet had approved a new pathway under which all Agniveers completing their initial four-year tenure would have an opportunity to be considered for enrolment into the regular forces.</span></div><div><span>The revised arrangement introduces a second engagement period, which will be offered to the 75 per cent of personnel who are not selected for regular service after their initial four years. Their continuation will depend on their willingness to serve.</span></div><h3><span>What has changed under the revised Agnipath scheme?</span></h3><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">#WATCH | Delhi: Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani says, "Today is a very significant day for the Indian Defence Forces and for our 'Agniveers'. The Cabinet has created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Indian Defence Forces. As you are aware, the 'Agnipath' scheme was introduced on June 14, 2022. At that time, it was stated that there would be continuous performance evaluation of the Agniveers and that the scheme would be reviewed periodically. The first batch of Agniveers is now nearing the completion of their four-year tenure. Based on the performance evaluations conducted over these four years, we have received very positive feedback regarding their performance. As you know, 25% of the Agniveers are to be enrolled into the regular forces based on merit. Previously, the provision was for 75% of the Agniveers to transition back into society as disciplined and motivated youth. However, under this updated scheme, the remaining 75% of Agniveers will now be offered an additional engagement period of two years. Upon the completion of this two-year period, all those who are willing will be enrolled into the Armed Forces, subject to objective selection criteria. The remaining 75 per cent will now be offered a second engagement period of two years.</span></div><div><span>At the end of this extended tenure, they will be given an opportunity to join the regular Armed Forces, provided they are willing and meet the prescribed objective selection criteria.</span></div><div><span>"The Cabinet has created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Indian Defence Forces," the CDS said, outlining the four key aspects of the revised arrangement.</span></div><div><span>He added that the decision followed the original commitment to periodically review the Agnipath scheme and assess the performance of recruits.</span></div><h3><span>First batch of Agniveers nears completion of four-year tenure</span></h3><div><span>The Agnipath scheme was introduced on June 14, 2022, marking a significant shift in the Armed Forces' traditional recruitment structure.</span></div><div><span>The first batch of recruits is now approaching the end of its initial four-year service period.</span></div><div><span>The first recruitment round comprised approximately 24,400 personnel across the three services, including around 19,000 in the Army, 2,850 in the Indian Air Force and 2,550 in the Navy.</span></div><div><span>More than 18,300 Agniveers were earlier expected to complete their four-year engagement and leave the services by December 31, as the Army, Navy and Air Force prepared to release the first batch in phases from mid-November.</span></div><div><span>The Cabinet's approval of the second engagement period now offers these personnel an opportunity to continue serving beyond their initial contractual tenure.</span></div><h3><span>How will the revised selection process work?</span></h3><div><span>The revised framework retains the provision for 25 per cent of Agniveers to be absorbed into the regular forces after their first four years, based on merit.</span></div><div><span>For the remaining 75 per cent, the two-year extension will provide an additional period of service and an opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities.</span></div><div><span>Following the completion of this second engagement, those willing to continue will be considered for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to objective selection criteria.</span></div><div><span>The CDS said the positive performance assessments of Agniveers over the past four years had contributed to the decision.</span></div><div><span>The change marks a substantial modification to the original recruitment model, which was designed to create a younger and more combat-ready military through shorter service tenures. It also opens an additional route for trained personnel to pursue a longer career in the Armed Forces.</span></div>
