The Cabinet has created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Indian Defence Forces. As you are aware, the 'Agnipath' scheme was introduced on June 14, 2022. At that time, it was stated that there would be continuous performance evaluation of the Agniveers and that the scheme would be reviewed periodically. The first batch of Agniveers is now nearing the completion of their four-year tenure. Based on the performance evaluations conducted over these four years, we have received very positive feedback regarding their performance. As you know, 25% of the Agniveers are to be enrolled into the regular forces based on merit. Previously, the provision was for 75% of the Agniveers to transition back into society as disciplined and motivated youth. However, under this updated scheme, the remaining 75% of Agniveers will now be offered an additional engagement period of two years. Upon the completion of this two-year period, all those who are willing will be enrolled into the Armed Forces, subject to objective selection criteria. These are the four major aspects of this scheme."</p><p>— ANI (@ANI) <a href="https://x.com/ANI/status/2117910600214872117?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">November 4, 2026</a></p></blockquote><h3><script async="" src="https://platform.x.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></h3><div><span>Explaining the decision, General Raja Subramani said the first batch of Agniveers was nearing the completion of its four-year tenure and that performance assessments conducted during this period had generated positive feedback from the three services.</span></div><div><span>Under the existing framework, 25 per cent of Agniveers are selected for permanent enrolment in the regular forces based on merit.</span></div><div><span>The remaining 75 per cent were earlier required to return to civilian life after completing their four-year engagement.</span></div><div><span>The revised arrangement changes this provision. The remaining 75 per cent will now be offered a second engagement period of two years.</span></div><div><span>At the end of this extended tenure, they will be given an opportunity to join the regular Armed Forces, provided they are willing and meet the prescribed objective selection criteria.</span></div><div><span>"The Cabinet has created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Indian Defence Forces," the CDS said, outlining the four key aspects of the revised arrangement.</span></div><div><span>He added that the decision followed the original commitment to periodically review the Agnipath scheme and assess the performance of recruits.</span></div><h3><span>First batch of Agniveers nears completion of four-year tenure</span></h3><div><span>The Agnipath scheme was introduced on June 14, 2022, marking a significant shift in the Armed Forces' traditional recruitment structure.</span></div><div><span>The first batch of recruits is now approaching the end of its initial four-year service period.</span></div><div><span>The first recruitment round comprised approximately 24,400 personnel across the three services, including around 19,000 in the Army, 2,850 in the Indian Air Force and 2,550 in the Navy.</span></div><div><span>More than 18,300 Agniveers were earlier expected to complete their four-year engagement and leave the services by December 31, as the Army, Navy and Air Force prepared to release the first batch in phases from mid-November.</span></div><div><span>The Cabinet's approval of the second engagement period now offers these personnel an opportunity to continue serving beyond their initial contractual tenure.</span></div><h3><span>How will the revised selection process work?</span></h3><div><span>The revised framework retains the provision for 25 per cent of Agniveers to be absorbed into the regular forces after their first four years, based on merit.</span></div><div><span>For the remaining 75 per cent, the two-year extension will provide an additional period of service and an opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities.</span></div><div><span>Following the completion of this second engagement, those willing to continue will be considered for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to objective selection criteria.</span></div><div><span>The CDS said the positive performance assessments of Agniveers over the past four years had contributed to the decision.</span></div><div><span>The change marks a substantial modification to the original recruitment model, which was designed to create a younger and more combat-ready military through shorter service tenures. It also opens an additional route for trained personnel to pursue a longer career in the Armed Forces.</span></div>
