Nearly 1,000 people were arrested in France on Saturday after protests over rising living costs and poorly funded public services turned violent. While the government said 4.10 lakh people joined the demonstrations nationwide, unions put the figure at nearly 8 lakh. The clashes also drew a fresh comment from US President Donald Trump, who blamed immigration for the unrest, an explanation French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly rejected.<h2>Nearly 1,000 arrested in France</h2>French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the number of arrests was expected to rise as police reviewed reports from across the country. "As I speak to you, we are at nearly 1,000 arrests," he said at a briefing. At the same stage of the previous Saturday's protests, authorities had recorded 385 arrests. The latest demonstrations were held under a heavy security operation involving about 70,000 police officers and gendarmes. Authorities sought to prevent a repeat of the looting and damage that followed the protests on October 17. The Interior Ministry recorded 289 demonstrations across France on Saturday.<h2>Police use tear gas in Paris</h2>Most marches passed off peacefully, but confrontations broke out in some areas late in the day. In eastern Paris, masked individuals threw projectiles and fireworks at police officers near the end of a march.Police responded with tear gas, sound grenades and water cannon before dispersing the crowd near Cours de Vincennes. A helicopter was also deployed to help officers monitor the area.Official figures put the number of people who joined the protest march in Paris at 1.10 lakh, while unions estimated the turnout at 2.50 lakh.<h2>Violence reported in several cities</h2>Clashes were also reported in Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Nantes, Toulouse and other cities. In Marseille, groups set bins on fire and threw objects at police officers. In Lyon, about 10,000 people marched despite restrictions on gatherings in the city centre. Local authorities reported around 26,500 protesters in Toulouse.Nunez said two people suffered serious injuries, one in Toulouse and another in Clermont-Ferrand. He said the stronger security presence had helped prevent destruction on the scale seen the previous weekend.<h2>Why are people protesting in France?</h2>The protests began more than a month ago when school students demanded more teachers, better school buildings and improved classroom conditions.Workers, trade unions and other groups later joined the movement, seeking relief from high food, housing and energy costs and greater investment in public services.<h2>Trump blames immigration for France unrest</h2>The French protests also became a talking point in US politics. US President Donald Trump while addressing a Republican campaign rally in Perry, Georgia on Saturday said, "France is right now burning down because it opens its borders to people who hate it."The demonstrations have been organised around education funding, living costs and public services, although some groups involved in the violence have attacked police and damaged property.<h2>Macron rejects Trump's claims</h2>France President Emmanuel Macron had already rejected similar allegations earlier in the week. Speaking in Qatar on Wednesday, he criticised foreign leaders for using France's domestic unrest in their political campaigns and warned that misleading, AI-generated images were circulating online.Asked whether he was referring to Trump, Macron replied, "Among others."Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also blamed the disorder on extremist Islam in an interview on Tuesday.Left-wing leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, meanwhile, accused the police of using excessive force and criticised television coverage for focusing on clashes rather than peaceful protesters.<h2>More Protests Planned on November 5</h2>The General Confederation of Labour (CGT), a major French trade union, has called for another nationwide day of strikes and demonstrations on November 5.Also Read: <a href="https://english.zeenews.com/india/article-election-commission-sir-software-rti-trade-secrets-3160511">Election Commission refuses to name SIR software, citing trade secrets in RTI reply </a>

New Zealand have begun reshaping their fast-bowling combination for the remainder of the T20I series against India, with Matt Henry ruled out of the remaining matches and Lockie Ferguson set to miss the third encounter as the hosts balance their immediate challenge with a demanding schedule ahead. India are leading the five-match series with consecutive four-wicket victories in Christchurch. With three matches still to come, New Zealand will make several personnel changes under a planned workload management programme, while also preparing for the subsequent ODI and Test assignments against India.Henry, who featured in the first two matches, will remain in Christchurch before linking up with the ODI squad in Auckland ahead of the opening one-day international on November 4. The fast bowler bowled just two overs in the second T20I before leaving the field with a tight calf, an issue captain Mitchell Santner disclosed after the match.Ferguson, meanwhile, will not travel with the team to Wellington for Tuesday’s third T20I. He is scheduled to head to Auckland on Sunday and return to the playing group for the fourth and fifth matches, which will be held in Auckland and Hamilton, respectively. The changes will also affect Kyle Jamieson, who has yet to feature in the series. The right-arm pacer will travel to Wellington for the third T20I but will subsequently turn his attention to domestic cricket, remaining in the city to represent Canterbury against Wellington in the second round of the Ford Trophy on October 31. He will then join New Zealand’s preparations for the ODI leg.Blair Tickner is set to strengthen the bowling group for the final three T20Is, while Josh Clarkson will be available for the last two matches after travelling to Auckland. Matt Fisher will accompany the squad to Wellington as cover for the third game before returning to the New Zealand A setup for its second four-day fixture against India A.Tickner and Clarkson had initially been named as replacements for Zak Foulkes and Mark Chapman, who were ruled out through injuries.Explaining the rotation strategy, New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said the team’s available resources would help them navigate the workload of their fast bowlers across the upcoming assignments.“We’re very fortunate with the depth in the squad to be able to call upon different players to help manage our pacers' workloads and to try and ensure they’re best placed to perform for the team for all the cricket coming up,” Walter said.New Zealand retain further pace-bowling options in Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith and Adam Milne as they look to revive their campaign against an India side that has won both matches despite being pushed in the closing stages. The third T20I in Wellington will offer the hosts an opportunity to arrest India’s momentum before the series moves to Auckland and Hamilton. However, the workload considerations extend well beyond the current contest, with the teams scheduled to play five ODIs before concluding their India tour with two Tests in early December.New Zealand will subsequently travel to Australia for a four-Test series, adding further importance to managing the fitness and availability of their pace resources across formats.

New Zealand have made key changes to their squad ahead of the upcoming ODI series against India, with several familiar names in the mix. With the series approaching, the Black Caps have a few selection decisions to make as they prepare for the challenge.

Former India captain MS Dhoni has broken his silence on his participation in IPL 2027. Dhoni, who missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to injury, has offered an update on his plans for the upcoming season. The 45-year-old said he would decide on his participation before December after assessing his fitness. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran made the remarks during a healthcare event in Bengaluru on October 24, leaving his return for the next season uncertain.Dhoni said he would undergo medical tests before deciding whether he could play another season of the Indian Premier League."Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season," Dhoni was quoted as saying by ANI.Dhoni also made a light-hearted remark about his fitness, comparing himself to a vintage vehicle. He said doctors would have to ensure that he was fit enough to continue playing if he wanted to return for another IPL season."And if I am not, then, you know, you will have to make sure that you do everything right with me and make sure that this old vintage vehicle is running well on the road. So all the pressure is on them," he added.Dhoni's comments suggest that a decision on his IPL future will depend on his fitness assessment and his ability to handle another season. The former CSK captain has not confirmed whether he will return to the tournament in 2027.Retirement speculation has surrounded Dhoni for several seasons, but he has continued to feature for Chennai Super Kings. His absence throughout IPL 2026 marked the first time since the league's inception that he did not play a single match in a season.CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had also expressed optimism about Dhoni continuing with the franchise for another season. However, he said the final decision rested with the veteran cricketer."It's a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know," Viswanathan had said.<h2>CSK make changes ahead of IPL 2027</h2>Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings have made a major change to their coaching setup, parting ways with head coach Stephen Fleming and appointing Zaheer Khan to the role.Dhoni's potential return will remain a key talking point for CSK supporters as the franchise prepares for the next season. However, his latest comments make it clear that he will assess his fitness before taking a final call.

MS Dhoni will decide on his IPL 2027 participation before December after assessing his fitness through medical tests. The Chennai Super Kings veteran missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to injury and has yet to confirm his return for the next season.

The Election Commission has refused to identify the software used to spot errors in electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), citing legal protection for trade secrets, according to a report by Hindustan Times on Sunday.<h2>What the RTI applicant wanted to know</h2>The reply, dated October 16, was sent to MA Mujeeb Ayyub, a social activist from Karimnagar in Telangana. He had asked for the name and version of any software or AI platform used to identify irregularities in voter records. He also wanted to know whether the system automatically marks entries for checking, correction or deletion.Ayyub sought details of safeguards against genuine voters being flagged by mistake and asked who reviews a flagged record before action is taken. The Commission said that "no new software has been developed or procured for the SIR exercise". It also said electoral registration officers (EROs) make the final decisions on including or excluding voters after examining relevant facts and records.<h2>Why the Election Commission withheld the software details</h2>For the software's identity, the poll body invoked Section 8(1)(d) of the RTI Act, which protects "commercial confidence, trade secrets and intellectual property" under certain conditions. The exemption is not unconditional: the law permits disclosure if the competent authority finds that a larger public interest justifies it.The Commission treated questions about automated alerts, artificial intelligence, machine learning and protection against incorrect flags as requests for clarification, rather than information covered by Section 2(f) of the RTI Act.When asked who checks the flagged records, it cited Section 8(1)(g), a provision dealing with threats to personal safety and the protection of confidential sources. It referred to electoral registration officers' legal responsibilities under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.<h2>SIR voter list controversy and concerns over software access</h2>The RTI response comes amid separate disputes over the management of voter data. A September investigation by The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had lodged at least 14 written objections over 10 months. Some concerned access to electoral-roll systems and decisions about adding or removing names. The Election Commission described differing views as part of its internal decision-making process and said its digital systems followed strict security arrangements. The Indian Express also reported that more than 13 crore entries had been removed from draft rolls across 30 states and Union Territories. Draft-roll exclusions should not be confused with final decisions, as electoral lists can change through claims and objections.Former chief election commissioner OP Rawat told Hindustan Times that the RTI applicant should appeal the refusal. Under Section 19 of the RTI Act, a first appeal can generally be filed within 30 days of receiving a decision.<h2>How voters can check their names during SIR</h2>For ordinary voters, the immediate safeguard is to check that their names appear on the electoral roll. The Election Commission's official search service, <a href="https://electoralsearch.eci.gov.in/">electoralsearch.eci.gov.in</a>, allows people to verify their registration details. The Commission's voters' portal, <a href="https://voters.eci.gov.in/">voters.eci.gov.in</a>, provides Form 6 for registration or a claim for inclusion and Form 8 to correct an existing entry. Anyone who finds an error can contact the electoral registration officer for the constituency or use the relevant online service. Also Read: <a href="https://english.zeenews.com/world/article-france-protests-nearly-1000-arrested-trump-macron-2026-3160515">France protests turn violent - Nearly 1,000 arrested; Trump blames immigration, Macron hits back </a>

Mumbai: Over the past two years, Mumbai has witnessed several firing incidents targeting prominent Bollywood celebrities, including Salman Khan, Rohit Shetty and, most recently, Tiger Shroff. Although Rohit Shetty has never publicly spoken about the February shooting incident at his Juhu residence in Mumbai, where five rounds were fired, he indirectly referred to the incident during the latest episode of Bigg Boss 20, without explicitly mentioning it. While hosting the latest ‘Weekend Ka Vaar’ episode of ‘Bigg Boss 20’, Rohit Shetty pulled up contestants Scout OP, Asif and Yung DSA for repeatedly targeting Qazi Touqeer as a group. Drawing a parallel with real-life firing incidents involving film personalities, Rohit questioned the contestants’ attempts to portray themselves as gangsters inside the house. “Yahan humare ghar par goliyan chal rahi hain, tum kya gangster banke ghoom rahe ho?” Rohit said. On February 1, at least five rounds were fired at the first floor of Rohit Shetty’s residential building in Mumbai in the early hours of the day. No injuries were reported, and Mumbai Police later arrested several accused in connection with the incident. Recently, Tiger was targeted in a firing incident.  According to Mumbai Police, the firing took place at around 7 pm on October 18 in the Juhu area when Tiger Shroff was leaving a football club. The accused allegedly opened fire at the actor’s car. Meanwhile, the investigation into the Tiger Shroff firing case has revealed that the hotel room in Andheri, where the three key accused allegedly stayed, has been sealed by the authorities. As per sources, the Mumbai Crime Branch is also investigating allegations that the shooters practised firing at an unknown place before the incident. Investigators are also expected to recreate the crime scene with all three accused as part of the ongoing probe. Earlier, four accused arrested in connection with the firing on the actor were produced before Mumbai’s Esplanade Court (Killa Court) on Thurday. Anil Pandit has been named as an absconding accused in the case, according to the police remand application submitted before the court.

During Bigg Boss 20, host Rohit Shetty pulled up contestants for acting like gangsters inside the house, indirectly referencing the recent firing incidents targeting him and other Bollywood celebrities like Tiger Shroff.

New Delhi: Gold edged slightly higher on Saturday while currently standing at Rs 14,258 per gram for 24-carat purity on October 25, 2026. Rates for 22K and 18K gold are Rs 13,070 per gram and Rs 10,694 per gram, respectively.Yellow metal on October 24 went up by Rs 10 for 24K purity, Rs 10 for 22K purity, and Rs 08 for 18K purity compared with October 23, 2026.Gold still remains under pressure due to elevated oil prices. Brent crude future for December on Friday hovered at a six-month high, settling up 3.1 per cent at $116.72 a barrel due to continued geopolitical tensions resulting from the US-Iran conflict and the recent escalation between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The surge came even after US President Donald Trump's decision to waive sanctions and tariffs on Russia, strengthening hopes of better diesel supply to the market. Yet, energy prices remain elevated, further prompting expectations of rate hikes in the coming sessions. Also, the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released on Wednesday, October 14, once again brought expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike during the monetary policy meeting scheduled for October 27–28 on the table. The cost of gasoline surged, leading to a higher-than-expected spike in consumer prices in September. As per reports, Treasury yields rose sharply as the Consumer Price Index increased to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August.Previous reports suggested lower chances of a rate hike during the October meeting after Federal Reserve policymakers indicated that “There is no need for urgency” following softer US data.Meanwhile, the ongoing conflicts involving the Middle East have continued to keep inflation fears high since the end of February.US inflation data and interest rates set by the Federal Reserve continue to influence the yellow metal's trajectory. When the dollar is stronger and interest rates are high, the yellow metal comes under pressure due to the increased opportunity cost of holding it.Gold continues to remain under pressure, as its trajectory is likely to be influenced by geopolitical concerns and energy prices, with the Federal Reserve's rate decisions further affecting its price. On a different note, festive buying across India is also playing a role in determining the cost of the yellow metal.Check prices across India:Delhi24K: Rs 14,273/g22K: Rs 13,085/g18K: Rs 10,709/gMumbai24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,694/gKolkata24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,694/g  Ahmedabad24K: Rs 14,263/g22K: Rs 13,075/g18K: Rs 10,699/g  Chennai24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,695/g  Hyderabad24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,694/g  Lucknow24K: Rs 14,273/g22K: Rs 13,085/g18K: Rs 10,709/gPatna24K: Rs 14,263/g22K: Rs 13,075/g18K: Rs 10,699/gBangalore24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,694/g  Bhopal24K: Rs 14,263/g22K: Rs 13,075/g18K: Rs 10,699/gPune24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,694/g    Thiruvananthapuram24K: Rs 14,258/g22K: Rs 13,070/g18K: Rs 10,694/g  Amritsar24K: Rs 14,273/g22K: Rs 13,085/g18K: Rs 10,709/gChandigarh24K: Rs 14,273/g22K: Rs 13,085/g18K: Rs 10,709/g

The Congress will strongly reiterate its demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the INDIA bloc’s rally in Delhi on November 1, Haryana Congress in-charge Sanjay Dutt and state unit president Rao Narendra Singh said on Saturday, according to reports. The leaders emphasised that maintaining the integrity of electoral rolls, ensuring transparency in the electoral process and safeguarding every eligible citizen’s right to vote were essential to the country’s democracy. They asserted that the Congress would not compromise on these principles.Dutt and Singh said the Congress’s nationwide ‘Vote Bachao Desh Bachao’ campaign had reached a crucial stage, with preparations being stepped up across Haryana to expand its reach to every district, block, village and polling booth.According to reports, party workers have been instructed to document alleged irregularities in electoral rolls, raise awareness about eligible voters’ rights and mobilise a large contingent from Haryana for the November 1 rally. The INDIA bloc’s rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan is being projected as the culmination of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march against alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Congress has said that at least 10 lakh people are expected to participate in the march to protest what it describes as ‘vote chori’. The party added that the rally would convey a strong message of unity in defence of democracy and the Constitution.Dutt described the ‘Vote Bachao Desh Bachao’ rally as part of a nationwide movement to safeguard citizens’ voting rights, strengthen democratic institutions and hold the BJP government accountable.Dutt and Singh said concerns over the alleged lack of impartiality in the electoral process could not be adequately addressed while Gyanesh Kumar remained in office, asserting that his removal was necessary. They further stated that if an investigation established his involvement in undermining the democratic system or violating the law, appropriate legal action, including arrest, should be taken.Dutt questioned the Chief Election Commissioner’s role, stating that the Election Commission had a constitutional duty to ensure transparency and impartiality in the electoral process. He stressed that concerns regarding the potential removal of eligible voters’ names and discrepancies reported during the revision of electoral rolls required serious consideration.

The Congress will press for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s removal at the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally in Delhi, citing alleged electoral irregularities, concerns over the revision of voter rolls and the need to protect democratic rights.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group on Saturday denied reports that it had targeted Mecca and Medina, Islam’s two holiest cities, after Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted missiles heading towards the regions and reported debris falling at several locations. The Houthis maintained that their military operations are directed at Saudi oil facilities and military installations, stating that they publicly disclose such attacks when they occur. The denial came amid renewed cross-border tensions, as the group claimed responsibility for strikes on Saudi oil infrastructure and airports. Dialogue of the day: Throughout our lives, there are certain movies, series, or even books that stay with us forever. Sometimes it’s just a single quote; we hold onto these small comforts to help us get through days that feel especially heavy. Life has its ups and downs, and each day can be a mix of both. Today, I want to share a dialogue from one of my favourite ensemble drama films, something that can bring a little warmth, even on your hardest days.<h2>Dialogue of the day</h2>"Everything I love is in this room." — DisconnectThis deeply poignant line is delivered during a moment of raw vulnerability, serving as an emotional anchor in a story consumed by modern isolation, virtual noise, and fractured relationships. This powerful line gently reminds us that no matter how distracted or overwhelmed we become by the digital world, true fulfilment simply begins with recognising the presence of those closest to us. Life can pull us into virtual bubbles in unexpected ways, but as long as we pause and look around, the warmth of real-world human connection always brings us back to what genuinely matters. It encourages us to anchor ourselves in love and presence, especially when modern life feels entirely overwhelming.<h2>Meaning Behind the Dialogue</h2>While brief, this line serves as the emotional pivot of the entire film. It acts as a powerful reminder to:<ul data-path-to-node="7"><li data-list-item-id="ee4378c152d5350b0a97748d43a77b7e9">Prioritise real-world connection over the digital noise and distractions that consume our daily lives.</li><li data-list-item-id="e9e9c6a034a713d8f2cf152fed6d9a981">Value the people right in front of you before a crisis forces you to see what truly matters.</li></ul>Life is meant to be lived in the present, each moment offering an opportunity to cherish our loved ones, even if the world outside feels chaotic or distant. Whenever you feel low or overwhelmed by digital overload, try to pause, look up from your screens, and hold close the people who give your life purpose.Just as genuine presence can heal growing divides, look around and remind yourself of what truly counts, that you are grounded, present, and surrounded by the love that genuinely matters.<h2>About 'Disconnect'</h2>Disconnect (2012) is an intense, interconnected drama directed by Henry Alex Rubin that thoughtfully explores modern technology, human isolation, and our desperate search for genuine human connection in an increasingly digital world. The film follows a diverse group of ordinary people, including a cyberbullied teenager, a couple grieving a tragedy who fall victim to identity theft, and an ambitious reporter exploiting a story, whose lives collide as they navigate the consequences of online interactions. It serves as a compelling exploration of how technology, while designed to bring us closer, can subtly pull us apart unless we choose to look up and hold onto the real relationships in front of us.<div _ngcontent-ng-c522195098=""><message-content class="ng-star-inserted" _ngcontent-ng-c522195098="" _nghost-ng-c986882037="" id="message-content-id-r_821e712ca5bb3675"><div _ngcontent-ng-c986882037="" inline-copy-host="" id="model-response-message-contentr_821e712ca5bb3675" aria-busy="false" aria-live="polite" dir="ltr">Dialogue of the day: Throughout our lives, there are certain movies, series, or even books that stay with us forever. Dialogue of the day from Disconnect, 'Everything I love is...'

Quote of the day: We often view intense emotional states like anger purely as destructive forces to be suppressed, missing the clarity and momentum they can provide. Audre Lorde’s perspective on radical self-awareness grounds a powerful emotional response into an actionable framework for personal growth and social change.<h2>Quote of the day</h2>“Anger is loaded with information and energy.” - Audre Lorde<h2>Meaning behind the quote</h2>The core of this statement lies in shifting our perspective on a universally misunderstood emotion. By asserting that anger contains both "information" and "energy," the quote highlights that anger is rarely a random or meaningless disruption; rather, it is a vital diagnostic signal indicating where our boundaries have been crossed or where injustice resides. The highlight of her statement lies in viewing emotional intensity through a constructive, transformative lens. Rather than letting anger consume us destructively or suppressing it out of discomfort, Lorde frames it as a source of deep self-knowledge and a catalyst for decisive action. The recognition of anger’s latent energy reinforces that intense feelings, when properly understood, can fuel positive transformation and sustained effort. Personal growth and meaningful change aren't achieved by ignoring hard truths; they are forged by listening to what our emotions reveal and directing that power toward purpose. For anyone seeking motivation or a reset today, the message serves as a reminder that your most challenging emotions can become your strongest compass. Clarifying what your anger is telling you, and using that force productively, is entirely within your control.<h2>About Audre Lorde</h2>Audre Lorde was an influential American writer, poet, feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist. Describing herself as a "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," she dedicated her life and work to confronting racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. More than 410,000 people took to the streets across France on Saturday to protest against the rising cost of living and a lack of funding for education, with clashes between demonstrators and police reported in several cities. Security forces deployed tear gas and water cannons in Paris as authorities stepped up measures to prevent a repeat of recent street violence.Hundreds of demonstrations were held nationwide, drawing students, trade unions, activists and civil society groups. While many gatherings remained peaceful, confrontations broke out in several major cities, including Paris, Lyon, Lille, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes and Toulouse.According to official figures released by French law enforcement, the nationwide turnout stood at 410,000. Police arrested 135 people and seized a range of weapons during the demonstrations, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.<h2>Clashes In Paris And Lyon</h2>Violence escalated in Paris late on Saturday evening, prompting riot police to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Earlier in the day, Paris police had described the atmosphere in the capital as "calm".Speaking about the security situation, Nunez said that "there has been no major incident" so far, according to France 24.The items seized by police included metal balls, lead pellets, fireworks, slingshots, steel balls, improvised weapons, airsoft guns and a Japanese katana sword. In Lyon, riot police fired tear gas to disperse around 150 demonstrators who attempted to block a central road in an area where protests were banned, Euronews reported.Despite restrictions on gatherings, nearly 10,000 people marched through Lyon, according to estimates from the Rhône prefectural authorities cited by France 24. Officials said demonstrators moved in different groups across the city, acting "in a very erratic manner, without any clearly defined objective" during the afternoon. In Toulouse, local authorities estimated that around 26,000 people joined the demonstrations. Protests were also reported in Marseille and Lille, with clashes between police and demonstrators in Lyon.<h2>Thousands Protest Against Far-Right National Rally</h2>The city of Orléans emerged as another major focus of Saturday's demonstrations, as thousands gathered to oppose a two-day convention organised by Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party, known in French as Rassemblement National.Local prefecture officials estimated that 11,000 protesters had gathered in the city by noon, France 24 reported.Demonstrators targeted both Le Pen and French President Emmanuel Macron, chanting slogans and carrying banners opposing the far right. The protests brought together left-wing political leaders, trade unions, student groups, activists and non-governmental organisations, including Amnesty International. The demonstrations took place as the National Rally held a major political gathering six months before France's presidential election. The party's convention began shortly before 3 pm at the Zénith arena in Orléans, in the Loiret department. Thousands of delegates and supporters gathered at the venue, chanting "Marine for President", France 24 reported.Jordan Bardella was re-elected as president of the National Rally during the congress on Saturday.<h2>Student Protests Grow Into Nationwide Movement</h2>The latest demonstrations follow a wave of protests that began more than a month ago, when students took to the streets over conditions in high schools, teacher shortages, school-day schedules and inequalities between public and private education systems, France 24 reported. The movement has since expanded, drawing support from trade unions, civil society groups and the Yellow Vests movement. Anger over the rising cost of living has added to the unrest, particularly following violent clashes during demonstrations a week earlier.Authorities have increased security measures across the country in an effort to contain the protests and prevent further violence.Amid the escalating situation, President Emmanuel Macron convened a meeting of his defence council, which includes senior ministers and officials, to discuss the crisis.Although many demonstrations remained peaceful, the clashes in Paris and Lyon highlighted the growing challenge facing French authorities as protests over living costs, education and far-right politics converge.(With ANI inputs)

In a major development in the fight against organised crime, Indian gangsters Himanshu Bhau and Neeraj Faridpuria have been arrested in Las Vegas, the United States. The arrests followed intelligence inputs and technical surveillance by Indian agencies, highlighting growing cooperation between Indian and US law enforcement agencies in tracking wanted criminals operating overseas. In today’s episode of DNA, Rahul Sinha, Managing Editor of Zee News, conducted a detailed analysis of the arrests and examined how Indian agencies helped US authorities trace the two gangsters, who had been operating from abroad. The arrests send a message to Indian criminals who flee overseas to escape the law that foreign countries may no longer offer them a safe haven. US authorities, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reportedly acted on information shared by Indian agencies.<h2>How Himanshu Bhau Was Arrested In Las Vegas</h2>Himanshu Bhau was arrested in Las Vegas following inputs from the Haryana Special Task Force (STF) and Indian agencies, which used technical surveillance and informant networks to track him. Bhau had fled India in 2022 using a fake passport. Interpol issued a Red Notice against him in August 2023.Bhau entered the world of crime at the age of 17 and is linked to more than 41 criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, extortion, forgery and offences under the Arms Act. A reward of Rs 2.5 lakh had been announced for information leading to his arrest in Haryana, while Delhi Police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh.He has also been linked to several high-profile incidents, including a firing incident at YouTuber Elvish Yadav's house and a shooting at a cafe in Rajouri Garden. In March 2022, three targeted killings were reported in Haryana within 24 hours.<h2>Neeraj Faridpuria Also Arrested In The US</h2>Neeraj Faridpuria was also arrested in Las Vegas after Indian agencies shared information with US authorities. He had previously been detained for violating US immigration laws but was released on bail. He later removed his electronic ankle monitor and went into hiding before being traced and arrested again.Faridpuria reportedly began his criminal activities at the age of 14 and is linked to more than 25 serious criminal cases. In 2015, a lower court sentenced him to life imprisonment in a murder case. After securing bail in 2019, he allegedly fled India, travelling through Dubai to Canada and later to the US using a fake passport. Haryana Police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.<h2>Rival Gangs And The Fight For Control</h2>Bhau and Faridpuria are associated with rival criminal networks linked to the Bambiha and Neeraj Bawana gangs, which have long been at odds with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. According to the analysis, associates based overseas, including in Portugal, Dubai and the US, have been involved in activities such as extortion, contract killings and illegal land grabbing.Faridpuria has been described as an operational crime head of the Bambiha gang, while Bhau is said to have handled its international operations. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang's core areas of activity include Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Punjab, where its network overlaps with those of rival gangs.Bhau's arrest could weaken his network, but it may not bring the gang's activities to an end. Yogesh Kadian is alleged to have managed parts of the network while Bhau was abroad. Other alleged associates, including Sahil Ritoli, Naseeb alias Daku Kulasiya and Aman Bhainswal, are also reported to remain outside prison and active. The arrest could also affect the balance of power among rival criminal groups. However, the impact will depend on whether other members can continue running the network and maintaining its operations from within India or overseas.<h2>What Happens Next? Deportation Or Extradition</h2>Both gangsters are reportedly being held at the Henderson Detention Centre in Nevada. Their return to India could take place through deportation or extradition, depending on the legal circumstances. If US authorities establish violations of immigration law, including the use of fake passports, deportation may be possible. The recent deportation of Anmol Bishnoi under immigration provisions has also highlighted this route.India and the US signed an extradition treaty in 1997. Under the process, Indian authorities, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, would submit relevant evidence and court warrants to the US Department of Justice. A US court would examine whether the legal requirements had been met, after which the US Secretary of State would issue the final order.Red Notices have already been issued against the two men, and their identities have reportedly been verified. Indian agencies are expected to coordinate with their US counterparts on the next steps to bring them back to India.<h2>Lessons From International Crime Syndicates</h2>The arrests also raise questions about the future of the gangs linked to Bhau and Faridpuria. The history of international criminal syndicates shows that the arrest of a leading figure does not always end a network.Colombia's Medellin Cartel collapsed following the fall of Pablo Escobar, while the Cali Cartel expanded its influence. The arrest of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán also contributed to divisions within Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel. In India, the arrest of Chhota Rajan in Bali in 2015 was followed by a decline in the activities of his syndicate.Whether Bhau's arrest leads to a similar decline or creates an opening for rival gangs remains to be seen. The arrests of Bhau and Faridpuria, however, underline the role of intelligence-sharing and international cooperation in tracking wanted criminals who attempt to evade justice by moving across borders.

The arrests followed intelligence inputs and technical surveillance by Indian agencies, highlighting growing cooperation between Indian and US law enforcement agencies in tracking wanted criminals operating overseas.

<div>More than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff members of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), along with Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Professor Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, gathered at the university’s Ansari Auditorium lawns on Saturday to discuss the way forward amid ongoing student protests.</div><div>The meeting followed four rounds of talks and an appeal issued by a university committee on Friday night urging students to call off their agitation. The gathering came after a week of efforts by a seven-member high-level committee of university professors, constituted on October 18, to mediate with students demanding elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU).</div><h2>Staff adopt two resolutions</h2><div>Faculty members and staff expressed dismay over incidents of vandalism and the defacement of campus walls with what they described as highly objectionable slogans. They said such acts undermined the academic atmosphere and the dignity of an institution with a 106-year legacy, according to a university release.</div><div>The gathering unanimously adopted two resolutions. The first called on protesting students to vacate the protest site and end their agitation to restore peace and normalcy on campus. The staff particularly objected to the occupation of the Ghalib statue lawns, which they said had been taken over illegally despite Gate No. 18 being the designated protest site.</div><div>Under the second resolution, faculty members and staff pledged to repaint the defaced walls and cover slogans they described as highly condemnable and detrimental to the country’s integrity, security and sovereignty.</div><div>They warned that the slogans could cause lasting and irreversible damage to JMI’s reputation and standing. The staff stressed that the standing of a historic institution should not be jeopardised by the actions of a handful of individuals, particularly when the consequences could affect the wider university community.</div><div>Teachers, describing themselves as key stakeholders who had devoted decades to the institution, said they could not allow the university to be held to ransom. They also voiced concern over what they called falsehoods and misinformation being circulated by students on social media, warning that these could harm the university’s reputation.</div><h3>BJP, opposition demand probe into 'Free Kashmir' slogans</h3><div>The controversy over "Free Kashmir" slogans at Jamia Millia Islamia intensified on Saturday, with BJP leaders demanding an investigation and strict action against those responsible. Congress leader Udit Raj also called for a probe, while Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma said the slogans should be investigated separately from the students’ demand for union elections.</div><div>Both reiterated that Kashmir is an integral part of India. Meanwhile, students continued their indefinite hunger strike, which entered its 13th day, demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) and elections.</div><h2>VC, registrar warn of impact on students’ prospects</h2><div>Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Professor Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi expressed serious concern over the defacement of university property and the writing of objectionable slogans threatening the country’s integrity and sovereignty.</div><div>They warned that such incidents could damage JMI’s standing and undermine the credibility of its students, potentially affecting their future employment and placement prospects as well as opportunities for higher education.</div><div>Addressing the gathering, members of the high-level committee said the university had made swift efforts to address an issue that had remained unresolved for two decades, but the protesting students had continued to resist engagement.</div><div>The JMI Students’ Union was suspended in 2006 following recurring incidents of violent clashes, attacks on teachers and occasional disruptions to classes.</div><div>The committee said the current administration had promptly notified the formation of a JMISU Constitution Draft Committee on October 21, 2026. It described the move as an initiative that no Vice-Chancellor or Registrar had undertaken since 2006.</div><div>Despite this step, students on hunger strike had shown no willingness to engage with the administration to reach an amicable settlement, the committee said.</div><h2>Disciplinary review fails to bring students to talks</h2><div>The committee members reiterated that the university had continued reaching out to protesters. On October 21, the administration issued another notification stating that “all disciplinary action taken or initiated against students sitting on protests with causes originating from 12.10.26 till 5:30 pm of 21.10.26 will be reviewed”.</div><div>The concession, however, failed to bring the protesters to the negotiating table, according to the release.</div><div>The committee said students remained adamant and escalated tensions by inviting leaders and representatives of local, regional and national political parties and groups. Teachers warned that these developments could further worsen the campus atmosphere and lead to chaos, hooliganism, vandalism and additional defacement of university walls.</div><h2>Teachers’ outreach ends in confrontation</h2><div>After adopting the resolutions, teaching and non-teaching staff marched from the Ansari Auditorium lawns, passing through Gate No. 13 and crossing the main road to reach Gate No. 7. They then proceeded to the protest site to persuade students to end their agitation.</div><div>The staff spent two hours attempting to convince the protesters to call off the demonstration and restore normalcy on campus. However, the students continued chanting slogans and shouting at faculty members to “go back”, the university release said.</div><div>The students then allegedly began pushing security guards, staff members and teachers, while refusing to heed repeated appeals from senior faculty members. This happened despite the university having met their demands earlier in the week, according to the release.</div><div>The teachers and staff eventually withdrew from the protest site and returned to the Ansari Auditorium.</div><h2>JMI shifts classes online with immediate effect</h2><div>Following the day’s developments, the university administration issued a notification announcing that classes across all courses would move online with immediate effect.</div><div>The decision was taken in view of the prevailing situation and to ensure the safety and security of the university’s bona fide students.</div><div>JMI advised all students to follow their online class schedules and avoid visiting the campus. The university’s gates and libraries will remain closed while classes are held online, until further notice.</div><div>(with ANI inputs)</div><div> </div><div> </div>
