New Delhi: Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to generate $2.52 trillion in annual economic value worldwide by automating and enhancing existing work processes, but rising deployment costs could significantly reduce those benefits, according to a new report by consulting firm McKinsey. The report, titled The AI Value Curve: The Economics of Applying AI to Existing Work, highlights a growing disconnect between the rapid adoption of AI technologies and the economic value organisations are actually able to capture.According to the study, many companies are prioritising AI implementation without adequately evaluating whether the technology is delivering sufficient returns on investment.McKinsey estimated that a 30 per cent increase in the effective cost of AI deployment could erase as much as $850 billion in annual economic value. Under such a scenario, the technology's projected global impact would decline from $2.52 trillion to $1.67 trillion per year.In the United States, the report found that annual economic value generated by AI could fall from $960 billion to $640 billion if costs rise by a similar margin. McKinsey noted that these figures represent a modelled scenario rather than a prediction of future outcomes. The findings come at a time when businesses are spending heavily on AI infrastructure, software platforms and automation technologies. The report estimated that global investments in AI infrastructure could reach approximately $7 trillion by 2030, requiring annual profit pools of around $760 billion to justify those expenditures.Among industries, financial services emerged as the sector with the highest potential gains from AI adoption, with estimated annual economic benefits of $530 billion. The education sector ranked second, with potential gains of $410 billion, followed by technology, media and telecommunications at $360 billion. Healthcare could generate an estimated $310 billion in annual value through AI-enabled applications. The report also challenged the perception that AI's primary role is to replace lower-wage workers. Instead, it suggested that some of the most attractive economic opportunities lie in supporting highly skilled professionals in fields such as law, healthcare, management and computer-related occupations, where the technology can enhance productivity and decision-making.

Every year, as board exams and entrance tests approach, households across India begin to run on a single setting: study. Tension is expected. Sleepless nights, irritability, and a racing mind are treated as part of the package. What rarely gets noticed is the student who is not studying more, but getting stuck. Reading the same line again and again, rewriting a page until it looks right, asking a parent for the tenth time whether an answer is correct. That pattern can be exam stress that has become intense. It can also be obsessive-compulsive disorder, and the two are easy to confuse because both appear when a student is under heavy pressure.Shyam Gupta, Founder & OCD Specialist, Emotion of Life, says, "OCD patterns often begin in childhood or early adolescence. Indian clinic studies of young patients place the typical start between roughly 10 and 14 years of age, which overlaps with the years when board exams and coaching take over a student's life. Globally, between 1 and 3 percent of people are estimated to live with OCD, so a school of a thousand students is likely to have a handful of affected children, most of them unrecognised."The wider backdrop is heavy. A survey by the Supreme Court's national task force on student mental health, covering more than 2.4 lakh students in higher education, found that 15 percent had faced severe distress and 9 percent had often had suicidal thoughts. Those numbers describe distress in general, not OCD, but they show how easily a struggling student gets filed under normal pressure.Exam stress vs OCD: What is the difference?Exam stress is tied to a real event. It rises as the paper gets closer and usually eases once the exam is over. Revision, even when tiring, tends to bring some reassurance, because a chapter read twice feels more familiar than a chapter read once.Shyam Gupta says, "OCD behaves differently. The worry is less about marks and more about a feeling that something is not right. That maybe a small mistake will lead to something terrible. Re-reading does not calm the doubt. It feeds it." A few key points help tell the two apart:1. Time lost to rituals, such as two hours spent on a single page2. Relief that never arrives, even after repeated checking3. Distress that continues after the exam, with the paper replayed mentally for days4. Rules that make no practical sense, such as stepping on a certain tile or holding a pen at a certain angleHow it looks in a classroom?OCD in students rarely looks like handwashing. It usually hides inside study habits. A student reads a paragraph, feels a flicker of doubt about whether it sank in, and starts again, sometimes fifteen or twenty times. Handwriting is erased until the paper tears, or pages are thrown away because a smudge makes the work feel spoiled. From outside, this is often praised. Parents and teachers see a sincere, meticulous child. The student is exhausted and frightened, and may be hiding most of it.Why more checking means more doubt?Gupta reveals, "Research on compulsive checking shows that memory accuracy in people with OCD is generally as good as anyone else's. What drops is confidence. The first check gives a clear impression. By the third or fourth, the impression blurs, and the mind starts to question whether the line was really read."A student who rereads an answer to feel certain ends up feeling less certain. That is the loop, and it is why telling a student to just revise once more often makes things worse.Reassurance is the most common trap for families. Answering "is this correct?" again and again feels kind. However, it teaches the brain that doubt can only be settled by someone else. A better response is to acknowledge the worry, then decline to answer the same question a fifth time. What should adults do if they suspect a student may be at risk of self-harm?Experts advise parents and teachers to take warning signs seriously rather than dismissing them as normal academic stress. If a student talks about wanting to hurt themselves, expresses hopelessness or worthlessness, suddenly withdraws from family and friends, or shows a significant change in behaviour, an adult should respond calmly and directly.Neelam Mishra, RCI-licensed consultant clinical and rehabilitation neuropsychologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, says, "If an adult suspects that a student may be at risk of self-harm, they should not leave the student alone if there is an immediate safety concern. They should listen without judgement, ask directly and calmly whether the student is thinking about hurting themselves, and connect them with a qualified mental-health professional or emergency support. Asking about self-harm does not mean putting the idea into a student's mind. What should be avoided is scolding, threatening, shaming, dismissing the concern or telling the student to simply ‘be strong’. The priority should be safety, connection and timely professional intervention."What are the biggest red flags parents and teachers should never ignore?Dr Samant Darshi, Psychiatrist and De-addiction Specialist at Psymate Healthcare Noida, says, "Adults should never overlook symptoms such as withdrawal, depression, anxiety, excessive crying, feeling hopeless, panic attacks, cutting, talking about dying or committing suicide, dramatic changes in behavior, dropping grades, the inability to focus, and disinterest in previously enjoyed activities. Phrases like “I can’t do this anymore” and “Everyone would be happier without me” should raise red flags and seek professional help immediately."What treatment looks like? The approach with the strongest evidence is exposure and response prevention, delivered within cognitive behavioural therapy. For a student, this may mean reading a page once and moving on, or writing practice papers in pen so erasing is not possible. The urge to go back rises, peaks and fades without being obeyed. Over weeks, the brain learns that uncertainty can be tolerated.Genetic research published this month adds context. It linked childhood and teenage OCD to brain circuits that govern habits and the ability to stop repetitive behaviour. Compulsive studying, in other words, is not stubbornness or weak resilience.A student who is stuck, and not just stressed, needs a proper assessment, not a longer timetable.Important: If a student is in immediate danger or may act on thoughts of self-harm, they should not be left alone. Seek urgent professional or emergency support rather than attempting to manage the situation only through conversation. (Discussions on suicides can be triggering for some. New Delhi: Indian rice companies are looking to expand their presence in overseas markets, including the United Kingdom and Europe, as exporters see opportunities for growth in international trade. Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026 in New Delhi, industry representatives highlighted plans to enter new markets, expand their export networks and strengthen India's position in the global rice trade. Shashi Shrivastava, Business Head, Hari Bhog Agra Food (HBAF) LLP, said the company is looking to expand into European markets after establishing its presence in the Middle East. "We cover the Saudi market, Middle East, Iran, Iraq. Now we are expanding to UK, Europe market. This is our goal," he told ANI. He said the company has been able to establish its presence in domestic and overseas markets by focusing on product quality, competitive pricing and customer requirements. Expressing optimism about the industry's growth prospects, Ashish Nainani, Director, International Sales, Goenka Group of Industries, said India remains a major hub for rice exports, with overseas demand creating opportunities for exporters. "The progress will be quite good and as you know that India is the major hub for rice and there are many Indians settled abroad who like to have rice. So there is a huge scope and growth in this sector," he said. Nainani said the group exports non-basmati rice to markets including Europe, the United States, Gulf countries, Singapore and Australia. Meanwhile, Virender Kumar, Managing Director, Delhi Pasand Agro (P) Ltd, said the company is now exploring opportunities to expand beyond its established domestic business. "Our domestic relations are very good. But now we want to get out a little bit," he said, highlighting the company's plans to explore exports. He added that the company was meeting international buyers, including those from Dubai and Jeddah, at the exhibition. The comments reflect growing interest among Indian rice businesses in diversifying their export destinations and using industry platforms to establish new international trade relationships. A 32-year-old woman who conceived through IVF was found to be carrying two pregnancies at once, one in the uterus and the other in the right fallopian tube. By the time she reached surgery, the tubal pregnancy had ruptured, and about 800 ml of blood and clots had collected in her abdomen. What is a heterotopic pregnancy? She was 11 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with a heterotopic pregnancy, which is when an intrauterine pregnancy and an ectopic pregnancy occur at the same time. It is a rare condition, occurring in about 1 in 30,000 pregnancies (around 0.003%) in the general population. If the pregnancy follows assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF, the risk is higher. The main difficulty for the doctors was to remove the ruptured ectopic pregnancy and stop the internal bleeding without disturbing the pregnancy inside the uterus. The team carried out an emergency laparoscopic right-sided salpingectomy, removing the ruptured fallopian tube, and then cleared the blood and clots from the abdominal cavity. They found about 800 ml of blood and clots in the pelvis and abdomen. The right tube was swollen, ruptured and bleeding, with products of conception inside it.Why it can be difficult to locate the pregnancy? The patient also had endometriosis-related adhesions, which made the operation harder. Bands of tissue between the back of the uterus and the bowel had hidden the tube and ovary lying behind the uterus. This made it difficult to locate the tubal pregnancy and complicated the dissection. The surgeons had to take out the tube while handling the enlarged uterus as little as possible, to protect the pregnancy inside it.Dr Renu Sehgal of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Artemis Hospitals said, "The primary challenge in a heterotopic pregnancy is to manage the ectopic pregnancy while preserving the ongoing intrauterine pregnancy. In this case, the situation was particularly complex because the patient was already 11 weeks pregnant. At this stage, the uterus is significantly enlarged, while the tubal pregnancy is also well developed. Once the tubal pregnancy ruptures, bleeding can be torrential and immediate surgical intervention becomes necessary. The presence of endometriosis-related adhesions had also obscured the tube and ovary behind the uterus, making both identification and dissection difficult. Our focus throughout the procedure was to control the bleeding and remove the ruptured ectopic pregnancy while minimising manipulation of the uterus and protecting the ongoing pregnancy."ALSO READ | Before 45: What every woman must know about early menopause and perimenopauseWhat happens if the ectopic pregnancy develops?Doctors said that when a heterotopic pregnancy is picked up early, around 6 to 8 weeks, surgery is comparatively easier because the uterus and the ectopic pregnancy are both still small. In later cases, as the uterus grows and the ectopic pregnancy develops, the procedure becomes more technically demanding, especially if rupture has already happened. The woman recovered without complications. She was able to move about soon after the surgery, her catheter was taken out on the first day, and she was discharged in stable condition. She was advised to come back for follow-up and ultrasound checks to monitor the pregnancy in the uterus.Dr Nidhi said, "Heterotopic pregnancy is a rare and serious condition requiring prompt diagnosis and careful surgical management. The ruptured fallopian tube was causing major internal bleeding, but the pregnancy inside the uterus had to be preserved. The endometriosis adhesions made it even more difficult. Our priority was to control the bleeding, remove the ruptured pregnancy safely and minimize uterine manipulation to protect the ongoing pregnancy."Heterotopic pregnancy can be hard to spot. Once a pregnancy is seen inside the uterus, it can seem as though an ectopic pregnancy has been ruled out, but a pregnancy in the uterus does not exclude one in the tube. This matters most in pregnancies that come from IVF or other assisted reproductive techniques. How weight loss helps prevent pregnancy complications?"Weight loss is also helpful in keeping away the chances of miscarriage and pregnancy complications like hypertension, gestational diabetes, and premature delivery. So, a healthy body weight is crucial for sustaining a pregnancy. However, it's crucial to clearly understand that weight is not the only determining factor for treatment success. Age, egg reserve in the ovaries, embryo quality, and underlying medical issues are among the major contributing factors," Dr Ila Gupta, Chief IVF Consultant, Pristyn Care Ferticity, further explains.Doctors say the case is a reminder that severe or persistent abdominal pain, bleeding or other worrying symptoms in early pregnancy should be checked promptly, even if a pregnancy in the uterus has already been confirmed. Catching the problem early can prevent serious complications from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and give the pregnancy in the uterus a chance to continue. (This article is meant for informational purposes only and must not be considered a substitute for advice provided by qualified medical professionals. New Delhi: Former CIA Director David Petraeus has warned that militaries have little time to adapt to modern warfare. Drones, autonomous weapons and frequent software updates are changing battlefield tactics and the way soldiers fight and survive. He said the war between Russia and Ukraine had demonstrated how fast new technology could make established military tactics ineffective. He argued that armed forces must overhaul their training, equipment and decision-making processes at a pace that traditional military procurement systems often cannot match.Petraeus has commanded US-led coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and served as head of US Central Command, which oversees American military operations across a region stretching from Egypt to Pakistan. His experience in these roles has given him first-hand knowledge of how military strategy changes during prolonged confrontations.“The high-tech drone war between Russia and Ukraine shows one of the biggest changes in the way wars are fought in our time. Every military in the world needs to understand how important revolutionary institutional change has become,” Petraeus said while addressing the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi. His warning comes as countries, including India, assess the rising use of drones for surveillance, attacks and air defence. The war in Ukraine has shown that relatively inexpensive unmanned systems can threaten tanks, troops, supply routes and naval vessels. Militaries now have to rethink how they deploy their forces.
Why old war tactics no longer work
Drones and smart weapons have changed the way infantry and armoured units operate along the Russia-Ukraine front. Surveillance drones can detect troops and vehicles from above, allowing forces to direct attacks against targets that would previously have been difficult to locate.Soldiers stationed along Ukraine's line of contact spend much of their time underground to avoid detection. Supplies are delivered through remotely operated ground vehicles and drones instead of conventional trucks. Troops may spend as long as 60 days at their positions because travelling to and from the front can expose them to enemy attacks.Petraeus said that conventional military formations and battlefield methods could become easy targets in an environment where drones can identify movement across open ground.“Traditional warfare, tanks, infantry, engineers, air defence, electronic warfare... all of these can no longer survive in their existing form. Even if you have built trenches, a drone can be flown into them. Anything out in the open will be easily visible," he said.He said military leaders must find ways to protect troops and equipment while allowing forces to move, communicate and receive supplies under constant surveillance.
‘Armies must adapt within a year’
Petraeus believes the lessons from Ukraine must be adopted much faster by armed forces around the world. He said that Russia and Ukraine were changing battlefield tactics at a pace that other countries had not matched.Asked what he would do if given five years to rebuild a modern military, he said the job would have to be completed in a year."The first thing I would say is that this will not be done in five years, but in one year, because we do not have five years," he said. The process involves more than buying different types of drones. Militaries must also update the software that controls these systems and modify their hardware to respond to new battlefield threats. Petraeus said armed forces should be able to make software changes every week and hardware changes every few weeks.Such a pace poses a challenge for countries where defence procurement can take years, from selecting a weapon system to completing trials and bringing it into service. By the time a system is deployed, the technology and tactics used by an adversary may have changed.
Will AI drones decide who lives or dies?
Petraeus expects faster advances in autonomous weapons. These systems can identify and attack targets with limited or no human intervention. He said that fully autonomous systems were at the experimental stage, but their numbers could increase considerably by the end of 2026 or during 2027.Asked whether he was comfortable with machines making decisions that could determine whether a person lived or died, he said that he trusted a properly programmed machine to follow the laws of war."If a machine has been programmed correctly, I have confidence that it will follow the laws of war. And that 'if it has been programmed correctly' part matters a great deal," he said. His answer also shows why the design and testing of these weapons are so important. The ability of an autonomous system to distinguish between military targets and civilians, follow rules of engagement and operate reliably will determine how it is used in combat.
Ukraine's drones take on costly missiles
The war has opened a new front, with drones being used to destroy other drones. Ukraine has stepped up its use of interceptor drones to shoot down Russian unmanned aircraft, including Shahed-type attack drones. In January 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country was producing about 1,000 interceptor drones a day. His military chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that these systems destroyed more than 1,500 Russian drones in February 2026, including a substantial share of the Shahed drones launched towards Kyiv.According to Reuters, interceptor drones were bringing down around 40% of Russia's Shahed-type drones across Ukraine by April, compared with about 25% during the winter. The economics of air defence have helped drive this change. Petraeus said that some militaries had used Patriot missiles costing about $2 million each to destroy Shahed drones priced at around $50,000. Repeatedly using expensive missiles against cheaper targets places a heavy burden on defence budgets and can fast exhaust supplies.Interceptor drones offer a less expensive way to counter some incoming threats, although their effectiveness depends on the type of target, detection systems and battlefield conditions.
How Ukraine's drones hit Russia's Black Sea fleet
Ukraine's use of unmanned systems has also changed naval warfare. Despite lacking a conventional navy comparable to Russia's, Kyiv has used aerial and sea drones to attack Russian vessels in the Black Sea.Petraeus said that Ukraine had destroyed more than a third of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Aerial drones help locate targets, while unmanned surface vessels carry out attacks against the ships. The threat has forced Russian vessels to operate from ports and other protected locations rather than move freely across the open sea, he said.He also stated that Ukraine had sunk around 300 vessels carrying supplies to Crimea and attacked refineries within a range of 3,000 kilometres from its borders. The use of relatively inexpensive unmanned systems against warships and energy infrastructure has added another challenge for military strategists. Navies now have to protect ships and ports against threats that can approach at low cost, operate without crews and be deployed in large numbers.

Petraeus says the Ukraine war has exposed weaknesses in conventional military systems. Costly air defence missiles and vulnerable naval fleets show how drones are changing modern combat.

Diwali 2026 festive home decor tips: Festivals are the perfect time to refresh our homes, welcome prosperity and create an atmosphere of warmth and harmony. While decorative lights, flowers and diyas add festive charm, furniture placement can play an equally important role in making a living space feel balanced. According to Vastu Shastra, the thoughtful arrangement of furniture and decorative elements is associated with stability, harmony and positive energy. By combining traditional Vastu principles with practical interior design, homeowners can create a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment.Start with the main furnitureSahil Kumar, Vastu Specialist, reveals, "One of the fundamental principles of Vastu-inspired furniture placement is to position heavier furniture along the south or west walls of the living room. Large sofas, wooden cabinets and bookshelves can be placed in these directions wherever the layout permits. Traditionally, this arrangement is associated with stability and grounding. At the same time, keeping the north-east zone relatively open can help the room feel spacious and uncluttered."ALSO READ | Karva Chauth 2026 Vastu tips: Expert guide on puja direction, diya placement, and moon sighting rules for maximum positivityCreate a balanced seating arrangementSahil says, "Seating arrangements also deserve special attention. Arranging chairs in even numbers, such as two, four or six, can create symmetry and visual balance. For example, two accent chairs placed opposite a sofa or four chairs arranged evenly around a centre table can make the living room look organised and harmonious. Ensure that the furniture encourages conversation without blocking doors, windows or walking paths. A well-planned arrangement can make even a modest living room feel comfortable and inviting."Add festive elements thoughtfully"The south-east direction is associated with the fire element in Vastu Shastra. Therefore, placing a decorative candle stand or traditional lamp in this zone is a popular choice for festive home décor. Brass and gold-toned candle holders can complement the festive atmosphere beautifully. Always keep lit candles away from curtains, upholstery and other flammable materials," he adds.Wall décor can also contribute to the overall balance of a living space. The south-west direction is traditionally associated with stability and strength. Hanging a painting of a flourishing tree on the south-west wall is believed in Vastu-inspired décor to symbolise growth, grounding and strong family relationships. Choose artwork featuring a sturdy trunk, deep roots and healthy branches. A wooden frame and earthy colours can further complement the room’s interior.Keep entrances and open zones clearThe main entrance should remain clean, bright and welcoming. Avoid placing bulky furniture or shoe racks where they obstruct movement. During festivals, decorate the entrance with fresh flowers, rangoli and traditional lighting. Similarly, keep the north-east corner relatively free from bulky furniture and unnecessary storage. Fresh flowers or subtle decorative accessories can enhance the festive appearance without making the area feel crowded.Example of a Vastu-inspired layoutImagine a rectangular living room with its entrance on the east side. Position the main sofa against the south wall and a second sofa along the west wall. Place two accent chairs opposite the main sofa, with a compact centre table in the middle. A candle stand in the south-east and a tree painting on the south-west wall complete the Vastu-inspired arrangement, while the north-east corner remains relatively open.A practical and balanced approachUltimately, furniture placement can make your living space more balanced by improving symmetry, movement, comfort and visual harmony. This festive season, thoughtful furniture placement can help create a home that feels organised, welcoming and full of warmth for family and friends.“Festive home décor is not just about adding colours, lights and decorative accents; it is also about creating a sense of balance and harmony within the living space. Thoughtful furniture placement can make a significant difference, helping a room feel more open, welcoming and comfortable during the festive season. Keeping clear pathways, avoiding overcrowded corners and arranging seating to encourage conversation can instantly improve the overall look and functionality of a home," reveals Raghunandan Saraf, Founder and CEO at Saraf Furniture.Saraf says, "Simple changes, such as repositioning a sofa, creating a cosy seating area or allowing natural light to flow freely, can transform a space without requiring major investments. We believe that furniture should complement the way people live while reflecting their personal style. This festive season, homeowners can create a more inviting atmosphere by combining practical layouts with warm colours, soft furnishings and meaningful decorative elements. Ultimately, a well-balanced home is one that looks beautiful, feels comfortable and brings people together.”

New Delhi: The Non-Resident Indians and the Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) who want to park their foreign currency savings in India have the provision of Foreign Currency Non-Resident Bank or FCNR(B). Moreover, they may choose to add a family member who is an Indian resident as a joint account holder.Adding a family member who is an Indian would help in managing the account more efficiently.A person is allowed to open a joint FCNR(B) account with an Indian relative, however conditions may apply. Therefore, before opening such an account one should go through the details regarding with whom it can be operated and which mode of operation is applicable.Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and People of Indian Origin (PIOs) can open a joint FCNR(B) account with a resident relative on a 'Former or Survivor' basis only, which means the secondary account holder is allowed to use and manage the account only after the death of the former member. It is important to note that the NRI/PIO/OCI must be the primary holder of the joint account.Only one resident Indian can be the joint account holder. If the account is operated with NRIs, a maximum of four members are allowed to be joint holders. In that case, the mode of operation would be 'either or survivor'. This mode allows all the parties to manage the account independently. The State Bank of India (SBI) website states, "Funds deposited in the account can be by way of fresh remittance from overseas or transfer from other NRE / FCNR (B) account or NRO account (subject to limit)."The following individuals are eligible as relatives to hold the FCNR(B) account jointly:-- Members of a Hindu Undivided Family -- Husband and wife -- The relation between the two should be either as follows:a) Father (including step-father) b) Mother (including step-mother) c) Son (including step-son) d) Son's wife e) Daughter f) Daughter's husband g) Brother (including step-brother) h) Sister (including step-sister)The account holders are allowed to fund the deposits in two ways: through foreign currency remittance from overseas and through another FCNR(B) or Non-Resident (External) account.A Non-Resident (External) account converts the foreign currency into Indian currency based on the existing exchange rates to park the savings in India, whereas an FCNR(B) maintains the deposit in the foreign currency. An FCNR(B) deposit comes with certain benefits, including tax exemption and repatriation. The total amount deposited in the FCNR(B) account, including the principal and the interest, is exempt from Income Tax in India. Moreover, the total amount in the fund can be transferred outside India fully and freely.

Indian youth are being continuously exposed to loud noises by way of using earphones and headphones, attending concerts and playing games in a noisy environment. Although modern music and entertainment have become a daily routine for most Indians, continuous exposure to loud noises can result in gradual hearing impairment without having any symptoms from the beginning."The increasing popularity of personal listening devices makes hearing problems the key issue for teenagers and young adults. However, most people do not know that listening volume, time, and frequency also affect their chances of hearing impairment. Using the 60/60 rule, making pauses between listening sessions, using noise-cancelling headphones and refraining from very loud environments can prevent such cases," says Dr Bhanu Mishra, Consultant- Nephrology, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.Dr Bhanu says, "Awareness of the dangers of unsafe listening habits should be raised to preserve the future generation from hearing impairment. The problem does not consist in what you are listening to, but in how loudly you listen."ALSO READ | Slowing down the mind: 4 gentle Yoga asanas to overcome modern sleep struggles"Over the last few years, we have observed a worrying pattern among young patients walking into our clinics - teenagers and even children complaining of ringing ears, muffled hearing after concerts, or difficulty following conversations in noisy settings. This was uncommon a decade ago. Today, it is becoming routine. The reason is not mysterious. People use earphones for hours at a stretch, often at volumes well above safe limits, whether for online classes, gaming, or music. Unlike sudden hearing loss, this damage creeps in quietly. By the time symptoms are noticed, some harm may already be irreversible," says Anup Anand, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Centre for Hearing, Anand Hearing Care Pvt Ltd.What concerns audiologists and ENT doctors most is the casual attitude around this issue. Hearing health is rarely discussed in schools or homes the way eye care or dental care is. Parents monitor screen time but seldom volume levels.Anup Anand concludes, "We need simple, consistent habits - the 60/60 rule (how does the common man know the 60/60 rule?), regular breaks, and periodic hearing check-ups. Protecting hearing should not require a crisis to become a priority."

Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu concluded her campaign as the runner-up at the French Open 2026, losing a hard-fought match against world number one An Se Young of Korea in the women’s singles final in Paris on Sunday. The 31-year-old Sindhu produced a courageous performance before settling for a 21-16, 11-21, 12-21 defeat at the Arena Grand Paris, as the top-seeded Korean secured her fourth French Open title. With this, Sindhu fell short of becoming the first Indian since 1998 to win the French Open title. Notably, Aparna Popat won the French Open in 1998, setting a benchmark that no Indian woman has matched since. How The Finals Unfolded Sindhu started on the front foot, bringing great intensity and sharp court control right from the opening shuttle. Taking advantage of some early errors from the world champion, the Indian ace drew level at 11-all before pulling clear to take the first game 21-16. It marked only the second time in 11 career meetings that Sindhu managed to take a game off the Korean star.An bounced back with her trademark consistency in the second game. After a tight opening phase, the top seed took complete control with a long run of points to win 21-11 and force a decider. The momentum stayed with her into the third game where, following a 9-9 deadlock, An used her exceptional court coverage and defense to pull away and wrap up the match in 61 minutes.Sindhu Reacts After Her LossFor Sindhu, this was her second Super 750 final of the year, after she lifted the Japan Open title in July, beating three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the final. It was her first BWF title since December 2024 and a maiden Super 750 crown.Speaking after the closely contested final, Sindhu said, "When you're playing with the top athletes, you have to be at your 100% every single point. I know it's not going to be easy and you have to fight for every point. That's what we were doing."She added that the long rallies made it challenging to convert opportunities but remained positive about the lessons from the match.Reflecting on her recent form, the Indian ace said, "I'm absolutely looking forward to much better badminton from me. I'm happy with this, but I think there's a lot of space, a lot of room still there. So I'm looking forward for it."Sindhu's Run To FinalSindhu, the World No. 11, reached her maiden French Open badminton summit clash after overcoming Japan’s Hina Akechi 21-10, 20-22, 21-16 in the semifinal. Her campaign in France saw her survive a dramatic opening-round battle against Supanida Katethong of Thailand before beating Riko Gunji of Japan and Chiu Pin-chian of Chinese Taipei in straight games.Sindhu's run to the final marks the 10th time an Indian entry has reached the championship round of a BWF World Tour event (Super 300 and above) outside India this season. This officially surpasses the previous record of nine finals set in 2023.

PV Sindhu suffered a 21-16, 11-21, 12-21 loss against the reigning Olympic champion at the Arena Grand Paris, falling short of becoming the first Indian since 1998 to win the French Open title.

The protest at Jamia Millia Islamia reached its 14th day on Sunday, with students continuing a sit-in inside the campus to demand that their union be restored. Security personnel have been stationed outside the campus gate as a precaution. The students are asking for three things: the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia University Students' Union (JMIUSU), the revocation of the suspensions imposed on students, and action against those responsible for the alleged use of force during the protests.Student Anish Khan told IANS that the movement began with a single main demand, the return of the students' union, but has since grown to include these three key demands."The first is the restoration of the students' union. The second concerns the actions taken against protesting students on October 17... students were treated harshly, with many facing disciplinary measures such as suspensions, show-cause notices, and bans from entering the campus," he said. The third demand, he said, calls for action against those accused of "mistreating students during the protests". He also demanded the resignation of the university Proctor.Another student, Farhan Israel, speaking to IANS, said, "The Jamia Millia Islamia students' union must be restored. Furthermore, the university Proctor and the chief security advisor should resign. Additionally, all disciplinary actions taken against the students must be revoked."Regarding the controversial slogans written on the walls, he said: "It has not yet been confirmed that any slogans were written. Even if they were, they must have been written by people from the RSS or ABVP. Such actions are being taken to divert attention from our issues. We will not back down until our demands are met. The university administration is attempting to forcibly end our protest, which is why they have deployed security forces." An argument broke out between the students and the security officials at the university's Gate No. 4 over entry restrictions. Students without hostel identification cards were denied entry, which led to a brief commotion at the gate. However, the situation was soon brought under control. Meanwhile, amid the protests, the university has decided to conduct classes for all courses online.

Regarding the controversial slogans written on the walls, he said: It has not yet been confirmed that any slogans were written.

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday apprehended four Pakistani fishermen and seized a fishing boat in Gujarat's Sir Creek area, close to the India-Pakistan border. Officials said that the men had entered Indian waters to catch crabs. Acting on specific intelligence, BSF personnel intercepted them in the marshy region of Kutch district, where border crossings are closely monitored. Also Read: Kerala cafe controversy - YouTuber booked for outrage over Gandhi-Jinnah artwork and beef menu
Four Pakistani fishermen identified after BSF operation
The operation took place on Sunday, the tidal creek that runs between Gujarat and Pakistan's Sindh province. The four men have been identified as Kadir Thaimor, Muhammad Mussa, Azgar Thaimor and Ahsan Jat. All four are from Chach Jaan Khan village in Sindh. The group had crossed into Indian waters to catch crabs, a common fishing activity in the region's shallow creeks, as per media reports. BSF personnel acted after receiving specific information about their presence. A Pakistani fishing boat was recovered during the operation. Authorities have not publicly given details of the vessel's registration, the equipment found aboard or the next legal steps.
Why is the Sir Creek area sensitive for India and Pakistan?
Sir Creek is a narrow stretch of water and mudflats near the Arabian Sea. It separates parts of Gujarat's Kutch region from Sindh and is associated with a longstanding boundary dispute between India and Pakistan.Unlike a clearly marked land crossing, the area contains tidal channels and waterlogged ground, making it difficult for fishing crews to identify where one country's waters end and the other's begin. The same terrain makes surveillance demanding for border personnel. Shifting tides, shallow waterways and stretches of marshland can limit movement on foot or by boat. The BSF patrols the region to detect unauthorised entries and other cross-border activity, while fishing boats sometimes appear in the waterways close to the border.
BSF security surveillance in Gujarat's Kutch region
In May 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inspected BSF facilities around Sir Creek and Harami Nala.He reviewed surveillance arrangements and visited a border outpost during the inspection. The visit came amid efforts to improve monitoring in sections of the border where the terrain complicates routine patrols.
Previous Pakistani fishing boat seizures near Sir Creek
Sunday's detention is not the first involving Pakistani fishermen in the Kutch creeks. In May 2026, BSF personnel found an abandoned suspected Pakistani boat near the maritime border. Fishing gear was recovered, but officials reported no suspicious material in the initial inspection.Notably, such incidents have occurred repeatedly in the region, where fishing grounds lie close to the international border. Fishermen sometimes cross into restricted waters, although the circumstances of individual crossings can differ.Further information about the case is awaited from the authorities. Also Read: Congress alleges manipulation in SIR, seeks CEC exit over ECINET software row

New Delhi: Amid speculation of strike by LPG distributors over their demands, including a commission hike, the All India HP Gas Distributors Association (AIHPGDA), Federation of LPG Distributors of India (FLDI), and All India LPG Distributors Federation (AILDF) engaged in a dialogue with the three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).During a bipartite meeting on October 21, 2026, the directors and senior officials of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) agreed to jointly recommend an interim increase in the commission, as per a statement by AIHPGDA.According to the statement posted by AIHPGDA on X, the revised proposals have already been sent to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and approval is awaited. The core issues discussed during the meeting included the financial distress faced by LPG distributors, operational difficulties, and the forced upliftment of Non-Domestic Non-Exempted (NDNE) LPG, Free Trade LPG, and Non-Fuel Products despite lower demand.Operational costs are rising at the same time as commercial pressure is increasing as a result of reduced refill sales, restrictions on new LPG connections, and unsold commercial stock affecting working capital. The distributors' bodies also raised concerns regarding changes to indents without the distributor's consent. The requests placed by these distributors with the OMCs to obtain LPG cylinders for supply to customers must not be altered without their approval. For this, distributors have demanded recorded consent for commercial indents.Regarding the restriction on new connections, the managements stated that the matter had been reviewed at the highest level and that work was underway. The operational hurdles have emerged as a result of geopolitical tensions, leading to financial distress for distributors.Distributors also sought written standard operating procedures (SOPs), digital audit trails, and independent grievance redressal mechanisms to improve transparency and accountability. The meeting also discussed LPG-PNG safeguards, commercial business practices, reconciliation of OMC records with invoices and GSTR-1, supply-chain accountability, and consumer safety.“OMC Management appreciated the dedication of distributors and staff during the recent crisis, while indicating that complete operational normalisation would take time,” it added. The association further stated that the distributors had requested meeting minutes and an action matrix specifying responsibilities, deadlines, and matters requiring ministry intervention.“AILDF, FLDI and AIHPGDA will continue their work and follow up firmly and constructively. Our unity remains essential for securing a financially viable, respected and operationally secure distributor network,” it said.Separately, the Federation of LPG Distributors of India (FLDI), in an X post, said that it was “Grateful to the Petroleum Secretary for facilitating the constructive 21 October meeting with OMC Directors (Marketing), bringing LPG trade concerns directly before senior leadership.”(With inputs from ANI)

The Congress on Sunday accused the Election Commission of withholding technical details about the software used to examine voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), alleging that the refusal was aimed at hiding manipulation of electoral rolls. Also Read: Kerala cafe controversy - YouTuber booked for outrage over Gandhi-Jinnah artwork and beef menu The party’s charge followed an RTI reply in which the poll body cited legal exemptions for protecting software-related information. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Commission’s response had damaged public confidence in the revision exercise.Jairam Ramesh, who holds the party’s communications portfolio, referred to a Hindustan Times report on a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Telangana-based social activist MA Mujeeb Ayyub. In its reply dated October 16, the Election Commission declined to disclose the name and version of the software used to identify errors and inconsistencies in electoral rolls.
Election Commission cites trade secrets in RTI reply
The applicant had also sought to know whether artificial intelligence (AI) or other automated tools were used to check voter records, mark names for correction or deletion and protect genuine voters from incorrect warnings. The Commission, however, invoked Section 8(1)(d) of the RTI Act, which protects commercially sensitive information, including trade secrets and intellectual property. It said the questions on AI, automatic checks and safeguards sought clarification rather than information covered under the law.For a separate question on who reviews suspected errors, the Commission cited another exemption relating to personal safety and confidential sources. At the same time, it clarified that no new software had been developed or purchased specifically for the SIR.The Commission maintained that the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) in each constituency was legally responsible for deciding whether a person's name should be included in or removed from the voter list. It said such decisions were based on documents and other records.
Ramesh Questions AI Use and TCS Role in ECINET
In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh accused the Commission of using "flimsy excuses" to avoid disclosing how the ECINET system works. He alleged that the software had enabled central control over voter lists and linked this to what he called "massive, centralised manipulation" during the SIR."The lack of transparency around the ECINET software and the use of AI has damaged the credibility of the entire process among citizens," he wrote.Jairam Ramesh also questioned why people had learnt about Tata Consultancy Services' alleged role in developing ECINET through the company's disclosures rather than from the Election Commission. He claimed that AI had been used during the revision.
The Election Commission of India continues to hide information about the controversial ECINET software at the heart of the disastrous SIR, that has been used to centralise manipulation of the electoral rolls. Today, a leading national daily revealed that the ECI has refused to provide information on the software being used in the SIR in its response to a Right to Information (RTI) application. Using flimsy excuses, the ECI has refused to name the software being used in the SIR, or confirm whether AI is being used and what safeguards are in place. The lack of transparency around the ECINET software and the use of AI has damaged the credibility of the entire process among citizens. The ECI is repeatedly refusing to provide this information because it will reveal the reality of the massive, centralised manipulation that has taken place. •Why did Indians find out from disclosures of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) that they developed the ECINET software? Why has this not been transparently disclosed by the ECI? •Why has the ECI repeatedly denied the use of AI in the SIR and electoral roll revision, when it is clearly being used? The ECINET software and the IT Division of the ECI were the focus of several objections raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The complaints even reached the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which comes under the Prime Minister himself. The public knows that massive manipulation has taken place. Gyanesh Kumar must go. The SIR must be suspended forthwith.— Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) October 25, 2026

EC-SIR row
The latest exchange comes after an investigation by The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had recorded objections at least 14 times in 10 months to decisions linked to the revision.According to the report, their concerns related to access to voter records, changes to voter registration forms and orders allegedly issued without the full Commission's knowledge. The two commissioners also reportedly wrote to the Cabinet Secretary about changes in officials' responsibilities.Jairam Ramesh claimed the objections had reached the Department of Personnel and Training. The Election Commission, however, said the letters concerned the work of an officer on deputation and were not related to its IT policy.
Election Commission Defends ECINET
In a statement issued on September 26, the Commission said authorised field officers had access to ECINET according to their legal duties. It also announced a review by a committee that would include an independent expert from an IIT or IIIT.The panel maintained that decisions on the SIR were approved by the full Commission and that differing views were part of normal internal discussions. Also Read: Election Commission refuses to name SIR software, citing trade secrets in RTI reply

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner added another historic feather to his cap by becoming the first bowler in cricket history to register multiple four-wicket hauls against India in Men’s T20 Internationals. The 34-year-old Santner achieved the huge feat during the second T20I against India at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Defending a total of 180, the New Zealand captain introduced himself as India got off to a flying start. Santner halted the visitors’ early momentum in devastating fashion, triggering a top-and-middle-order collapse that saw India slide from 40 without loss to 112 for 6 inside 15 overs. He dismissed Abhishek Sharma (27), captain Shreyas Iyer (7, bowled), Axar Patel (11), and Naman Dhir (31).Santner bowled with classic drift, dip, and subtle variations in pace to finish with figures of 4 for 21 from his quota of four overs. Despite Santner’s brilliance, India recovered through an unbeaten 69-run seventh-wicket partnership between Tilak Varma (51* off 26 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (26* off 13) to chase down the target in 19.5 overs and win by four wickets, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. ALSO READ: MS Dhoni breaks silence on IPL 2027 participation, says decision to be made before DecemberA Unique Milestone Against A Renowned Batting LineupPrior to this match, a handful of elite bowlers across international cricket had taken a single four-wicket (or five-wicket) haul against India in T20Is, but none had repeated the feat.Santner's previous four-wicket haul against India came in the 2016 T20 World Cup in Nagpur, where he took 4/11 as New Zealand defended a modest total and bowled India out for just 79 to secure a convincing win. Only three other spinners have ever taken a four-wicket haul against India in T20Is: Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga (4/9 in Colombo in 2021), New Zealand legend Daniel Vettori (4/20 in Johannesburg during the 2007 T20 World Cup), and Scotland’s Gerhard Erasmus (4/20 in Delhi in 2026). Santner is the only one to do it twice.Santner’s T20I Mastery Against IndiaThe milestone further reinforces Santner's sustained dominance in New Zealand-India T20 encounters:Record-Setting Spells: Two four-wicket hauls (4/11 in Nagpur, 2016; 4/21 in Christchurch) against India in T20Is. Leading Wicket-Taker: He remains New Zealand's most prolific wicket-taker against India in the shortest format, taking his tally to 29 wickets while maintaining a frugal economy rate under eight runs per over. Middle-Overs Control: His ability to choke scoring rates and strike consistently through overs 7 to 15 has been central to New Zealand’s tactical plans against high-powered batting orders. While New Zealand ultimately fell short in the Christchurch contest despite the collapse, Santner’s bowling masterclass highlighted his longevity, craft, and tactical acumen at the highest level.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner etched his name into the record books with his sensational bowling performance during the second T20I against India at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

Its usage as an instrument of statecraft is simply unacceptable. It can never be justified. It can never be rationalised. Yet, it continues because not all states really display zero tolerance,” he said.

“Despite history holding so many lessons, some still allow political calculations to take precedence.
