US Iran Tensions: US President Donald Trump on Sunday ruled out an American strike on Iran, saying the United States would not attack the country on October 25. The announcement follows deliberations in Washington over its next move against Tehran. Regional intermediaries are pursuing diplomatic efforts.Asked by a reporter whether the United States would attack Iran, Trump first responded, “Would I tell you that?” He then said, “The answer is no. There will not be a strike today,” according to Al Jazeera.
Trump weighs Iran deal or more strikes
Trump has left the possibility of military action on a later date open.Earlier on Sunday, the US president said that he was still considering whether to reach an agreement with Tehran or continue military operations. He described the choice as whether to “finish the job” or make a deal. His recent statement followed his earlier suggestion that the United States could strike Iran as soon as Sunday.
Diplomatic contacts continues
Iran has said messages are still being exchanged with the United States through intermediaries, even as direct negotiations between the two countries are stalled.Tehran has rejected American demands that it views as requiring “complete surrender”. Iranian officials have said diplomatic channels are still open.Qatari mediators were also in Tehran on Sunday as part of efforts coordinated with Washington to reduce tensions, according to reports.
US-Iran standoff
The Strait of Hormuz is the main issue in the dispute because of its importance to international energy shipments.Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan said that Tehran had conveyed through Pakistani mediators that it was prepared to reopen the Strait if Washington lifted its naval blockade. An Iranian publication affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) disputed that claim, saying Tehran had made no new proposal.

Iran says diplomatic messages are still being exchanged through intermediaries, while conflicting claims over reopening the Strait of Hormuz have added uncertainty to efforts to ease tensions with Washington.

US Iran Tensions: Hours after US President Donald Trump raised the possibility of new strikes against Iran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that further military action by the United States and Israel would not change Tehran’s policies. He said that the war had changed the regional security situation and that the Strait of Hormuz would not return to its pre-war status.Speaking at a televised event in Tehran on Sunday (October 25), he said Iran would stick to its policies regardless of whether fighting resumed. According to the Associated Press (AP), he said that Iran’s policies would continue unchanged, whether war broke out or not.Trump said on Saturday (October 24) that Washington could launch another attack or reach a diplomatic agreement with Tehran. The statement followed tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
‘US won’t try again if there’s any rationality’
Araghchi argued that Washington and Tel Aviv would gain little from another military offensive after having already attacked Iran twice.“If there is any rationality, they will not try military action against Iran again,” he said. He described the military confrontation, which Iran calls the “Ramadan War”, as a turning point for regional security and said the region had entered a new phase.“Nothing will be like it was in the past,” he said.He also called for any settlement to cover every front where hostilities had taken place. “The end of this war must be across all fronts,” he said.Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also accused Washington of miscalculating its military campaign. He said the United States could not force Iran to submit through threats or pressure in the media.“The Americans entered a quagmire due to their own miscalculations, and it is up to them to take the necessary steps to extricate themselves,” he said.He described Iran as a country determined to defend itself and rejected the idea that a foreign power could dictate terms to Tehran.
‘Strait of Hormuz will never be the same again’
Araghchi said that the war had changed the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for world energy supplies.“The Strait of Hormuz will not be the same as before the 40-day war,” he said.Iran has claimed control over the waterway since the military confrontation began and has targeted vessels attempting to pass without its authorisation. The actions have faced opposition from Washington and countries in the region. The United States has responded by maintaining a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports.Araghchi also claimed that Iranian forces had destroyed more than 80 American aircraft and fighter jets during the war between the two countries. He alleged that nearly all of them had been hit by missiles while on the ground.“In this war, we destroyed more than 80 American aircraft and fighter jets, nearly all of which were hit by missiles on the ground,” he said.Iran’s ISNA news agency also quoted him as claiming that Iranian attacks had destroyed nearly all American bases in the region and hundreds of buildings at those facilities. He called for foreign forces to leave the region.
Trump keeps strikes and a deal on the table
The US president raised the possibility of another attack on Iran on Saturday while also suggesting that an agreement could be reached.“Maybe tomorrow… There’s a possibility I will. There’s also a possibility we’ll have a nice, big, beautiful agreement,” he said.He claimed that Tehran wanted a deal but questioned whether Iran would honour its terms. He defended US military operations in West Asia and praised the performance of American forces.“We have done an amazing job. Our Navy and military have done an amazing job,” Trump said.He also claimed that 259 ships had been sunk and that Iran was facing record inflation.
Iran denies Hormuz deal offer
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, killing the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamnei and several senior officials. Iran retaliated with attacks on US bases in the Gulf and shut down the Strait.A ceasefire between Washington and Tehran on April 8 halted the sustained bombardment. Tensions over the waterway and the US naval blockade have flared since then. The two sides reached a diplomatic agreement in June. It later fell apart, and both countries accused each other of violating its terms. Tehran has called for a return to the agreement as a way to secure a lasting settlement.Iran has also denied reports that it offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its naval blockade. Iranian news agency Tasnim said that Tehran had made no new proposal through Pakistani mediators.Press TV described reports published by a Saudi media outlet as “a lie and fabrication”. The publication had claimed that Iran sent a proposal to the US administration through Pakistan, offering to restore access through the strategic waterway if Washington ended its blockade.

Iran has rejected claims that it offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for an end to the US naval blockade. Tehran has also disputed reports of a new proposal through Pakistani mediators, while the two sides continue to disagree over the terms of a possible deal.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma struck centuries before left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma claimed her maiden four-wicket haul in international cricket as India beat Zimbabwe by 121 runs in the second women’s ODI here at the BCA Stadium on Sunday to seal the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare. After Pratika Rawal made 61, Harmanpreet (126) and Deepti (106 not out) shared a record 153-run stand for the fifth wicket to power India to 328/6 after an early wobble. Zimbabwe made a spirited start in reply through Modester Mupachikwa (49) and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano (46), but Vaishnavi’s spell in the middle overs triggered a collapse as the visitors were bowled out for 207 in 48.5 overs.Vaishnavi, who came into the playing eleven in place of the rested Kranti Gaud, ripped through the Zimbabwe line-up to finish with impressive figures of 4-39 from her 10 overs. Deepti then returned in the death overs to pick up 3-32 and round off a commanding all-round display. Apart from Vaishnavi and Deepti, Jintimani Kalita, Sayali Satghare and N Sree Charani picked a scalp each. After electing to bat first, India were off to a shaky start. Nomvelo Sibanda struck in the very first over when Smriti Mandhana went for an ill-judged pull off a short, wide delivery and was caught at short third. Sibanda claimed her second scalp when Shafali Verma (8) pulled one low towards midwicket, where Nyasha Gwanzura held a sharp catch inches off the ground, a decision upheld by the TV umpire. With India at 19/2, Harmanpreet and Pratika set about repairing the damage with a 124-run third-wicket partnership. Harmanpreet looked in control with her back-foot and off-side shots, while taking a liking to Sibanda and Tendai Makusha and finding the boundary ropes with a series of crisp drives and cuts. Pratika, who looked pristine, struck the first six of the match by lofting Makusha over long-on in the 10th over. The pair brought up India’s hundred in the 16th over, before Pratika completed her half-century off 57 balls and celebrated by stepping out to loft Loryn Phiri for a six straight down the ground. An over later, Harmanpreet reached her fifty off 51 deliveries.Zimbabwe’s fielding effort was also hit by injuries, with Mugeri-Tiripano hurting her right knee and captain Josephine Nkomo leaving the field after a diving stop. Nyasha finally broke the third-wicket stand in the 23rd over when Pratika, who was dropped on 59, swept straight into the hands of deep midwicket. She made 61 off 67 balls, laced with four boundaries and two sixes.Leg-spinner Olinder Chare struck in the next over, as Tejal Hasabnis (3) skied a slog-sweep to mid-on. Harmanpreet, who was dropped on 66 by Nkomo at short midwicket, and Deepti then steadied the innings. After Harmanpreet cut Nyasha for four, Deepti cashed in on some wayward bowling down the leg side, sweeping repeatedly to the fine-leg boundary while also cutting and pulling to race to 45 off 35 balls, with Harmanpreet unbeaten on 88 off as many balls at the second drinks break. Deepti then brought up her fifty off 37 balls in the 35th over by sweeping a Sibanda full toss past square leg.Harmanpreet, meanwhile, moved through the nineties with a classy drive through extra cover off Makusha before completing her century off 101 balls with a fine sweep off Beloved Biza in the 41st over. It was her eighth ODI hundred, but Harmanpreet kept her celebration low-key - settling for a handshake with Deepti as the Indian dressing room rose to applaud.Zimbabwe’s woes in the field continued, with Harmanpreet getting two more lives. Michelle Mavunga failed to hold on to a diving chance at long-on, while Nomvelo spilled a chance at backward point. The pair helped India race past 300 in the 46th over before Michelle finally ended Harmanpreet’s stay by luring her into a big hit with a slower, fuller delivery that was caught by at long-off. Harmanpreet, who hit 15 boundaries in her 121-ball 126, walked back to a standing ovation from her teammates. Her 153-run stand with Deepti is now India women’s highest partnership for the fifth wicket or lower in ODIs, eclipsing the 122-run association between Sneh Rana and Pooja Vastrakar against Pakistan in the 2022 ODI World Cup.Richa Ghosh (7) fell soon after, holing out to long-on off a Tendai full toss in the 48th over. Deepti, however, made sure India finished strongly. She reached her second ODI hundred off 83 balls – her first ton since 2017 - in the final over by sweeping Tendai between short fine leg and square leg, and remained unbeaten on 106 off 86 balls, laced with 15 boundaries. The sweep alone fetched her 36 runs, including eight boundaries. Deepti’s 83-ball century is the fifth fastest ton by an India women’s batter in ODIs, and she also became the first Indian woman to score a hundred at number six or lower, bettering Richa’s 94 coming against South Africa in the 2025 ODI World Cup in Visakhapatnam.Zimbabwe made a bright start to the chase as Modester cracked two boundaries off the first two balls from Sayali. The Indian seamers struggled with their lines early on as Modester continued to cash in on anything short or on the pads. But India struck through spin in the ninth over when Charani had Loryn Phiri (6) caught by short midwicket and end a 38-run opening stand.Chipo then took the attack to the spinners, hitting three fours in a Charani over. She added 69 for the second wicket with Modester before Sayali got a breakthrough in the 23rd over by castling her for 46 through the gate with one that nipped back in.Vaishnavi, who bowled slower through the air, then turned the game decisively in India’s favour. Switching to over the wicket, the left-arm spinner picked up her maiden ODI wicket when Modester fell one short of a fifty, as she sliced straight to backward point.Beloved Biza (34) tried to keep Zimbabwe in the hunt with some aggressive strokes against the spinners, but was trapped lbw by Vaishnavi after India successfully reviewed the decision. Vaishnavi then bowled Michelle Mavunga (3) with a classic flighted delivery that clipped the top of off-stump.Zimbabwe skipper Josephine Nkomo, who survived a dropped chance by wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, was also undone by Vaishnavi’s flight and was trapped lbw for 20 with the DRS failing to save her.Nyasha Gwanzura briefly entertained with the first six of the Zimbabwe innings, but Deepti trapped her lbw, while having Nomvelo Sibanda edged the next ball to slip. Though Deepti missed out on a hat-trick, she returned to dismiss Tendai Makusha with a leading edge to backward point. Jintimani wrapped up the innings in the 49th over and also got her first ODI wicket when Chiedza Dhururu chipped straight to cover, as India got another comprehensive win.Brief Scores: India 328/6 in 50 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 126, Deepti Sharma 106 not out; Nomvelo Sibanda 2-38, Nyasha Gwanzura 1-43) beat Zimbabwe 207 all out in 48.5 overs (Modester Mupachikwa 49, Chipo Mugari-Tiripano 46; Vaishnavi Sharma 4-39, Deepti Sharma 3-32) by 121 runs.

After Pratika Rawal made 61, Harmanpreet (126) and Deepti (106 not out) shared a record 153-run stand for the fifth wicket to power India to 328/6 after an early wobble. New Delhi: Beekeeping can offer an additional source of income for farmers who collect bee venom (apitoxin), a specialised product that can fetch up to Rs 1 crore per kilogram in the international market, according to experts. Farmers in Bihar’s West Champaran, Jehanabad and other districts have begun exploring this business along with conventional honey production. The process requires a specific honeybee species, specialised equipment and careful handling. Entomologists say collecting bee venom is a technical task, and the amount obtained from a hive is limited. The international bee venom market was valued at around $425 million in 2025, according to the experts. Demand for the product has helped create interest in venom collection among some beekeepers.
Which honeybee species is used to collect venom?
Dr Neeraj Kumar, an entomologist and the officer in charge of the Regional Research Centre at Madhopur, said the choice of honeybee species is an important part of the process. The species commonly used for commercial venom collection is Apis mellifera, he said. The venom cannot be collected in the same way from every species of honeybee, he explained and said beekeepers need to select the appropriate species and keep the colonies in suitable conditions before they can begin extraction.According to Kumar, around 10,000 honeybees are needed to collect one gram of venom. Only building a colony of that size does not guarantee successful extraction. Beekeepers also need the right equipment and a suitable setup.
How is bee venom collected?
Bee venom collection requires an extractor and other specialised equipment. The process cannot be carried out effectively on bees flying freely outdoors. The colonies need to be kept in fixed locations, usually in managed hives, so the extraction equipment can be used.Even with bees housed in a box, the quantity collected is limited. Kumar said a single box could yield around 5 grams of venom. The amount depends on the colony and the conditions under which extraction takes place. These requirements make the venom collection more specialised than ordinary honey production. Beekeepers need to manage their colonies carefully and learn how to use the equipment before entering the trade.
Bee venom market
The international price of bee venom can reach Rs 1 crore per kilogram, according to the experts. The market was worth approximately $425 million in 2025 and has continued to increase in value, said the experts. The high quoted price applies to a specialised product that requires considerable effort to collect. Producing a kilogram of venom would involve extracting very small quantities from many bees, making the scale of production and the cost of equipment important factors for anyone considering the business.

Bee venom extraction requires Apis mellifera honeybees, specialised equipment and large colonies. Experts say around 10,000 bees are needed to collect one gram of venom, while a single hive box can yield up to five grams.

In one of the most remarkable comebacks in ODI history, Shadab Khan delivered a career-defining performance, smashing his maiden ODI century and forging a world-record 89-run partnership for the last wicket with Haris Rauf to guide Pakistan to a thrilling one-wicket victory over England in the fourth match of the tri-series at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.Chasing a seemingly achievable target of 242, Pakistan looked destined for defeat after a disastrous collapse of their top and middle order. The hosts slumped to a precarious 154/9 before the 38th over, still needing 88 runs with only last man Haris Rauf for company.England appeared to be cruising towards a routine victory, with just one wicket standing between them and the finish line. But what unfolded next at Lahore was nothing short of cricketing folklore. ALSO READ: Deepti Sharma breaks Richa Ghosh's record, becomes first Indian woman to score ODI hundred at...Shadab Turned The Tide With CounterattackWith wickets falling at regular intervals at the other end, Shadab turned the tide with a remarkable counterattack. Switching from a defensive approach to calculated aggression, the all-rounder expertly protected Rauf while capitalising on every loose delivery.England’s pace attack, which had dominated proceedings throughout the evening, suddenly came under immense pressure. Shadab kept the scoreboard moving with authority, launching cleanly struck shots over the boundary, rotating the strike in the closing moments of overs, and finding gaps in a widely spread field. At the other end, Rauf displayed tremendous composure under pressure, defending crucial deliveries with determination and running hard between the wickets to keep Pakistan’s unlikely chase within reach.A Record-Shattering FinishThe drama continued into the closing stages. Shadab brought up his maiden ODI century with a boundary and later launched a six off Gus Atkinson. With three runs needed, Haris Rauf drilled a straight four off Henry Crocombe to seal the victory as the Gaddafi Stadium erupted.Shadab, who finished on 113 not out off 96 balls was named Player of the Match for his heroic effort. His 89-run stand with Haris Rauf is the highest tenth-wicket partnership in a successful ODI chase, surpassing the previous record of 64 set by Deryck Murray and Andy Roberts against Pakistan in the 1975 World Cup.Duckett's Fighting Knock For EnglandEarlier in the day, England posted 241 before being bowled out in 46.4 overs, largely on the back of a gritty century from Ben Duckett.Pakistan’s bowlers had executed their plans effectively in the first innings, restricting England’s stroke-makers and triggering regular breakthroughs to keep the visitors to what seemed like a below-par score. However, England’s bowlers hit back hard during the middle overs, reducing the hosts to 154/9 before Shadab stepped in to rewrite the record books.Match Summary:England: 241 all out (46.4 overs) Pakistan: 243/9 (47.1 overs) Shadab Khan 113*, Haris Rauf 7* Result: Pakistan won by 1 wicket

Pakistan produced one of the most remarkable fightbacks in recent ODI history, defeating England by one wicket in the fourth match of the tri-series at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday.

Lucknow: A man facing trial in a 2016 murder case in Uttar Pradesh allegedly used artificial intelligence (AI) to fake his own death and mislead the police and court. He reportedly staged a goat’s funeral, used AI to place his face on an image of the animal lying on a funeral pyre and shared the picture on social media to make people believe he had died. The accused, Rajkumar Rajbhar alias Raju, 38, was arrested near the Khwajajahanpur area of Mau on Sunday (October 25) morning. The police said he was also named in cases involving alleged fraud worth crores of rupees. He had allegedly collected money from influential people in several major cities by promising to invest it in the stock market and earn them substantial profits.According to the police, Rajbhar came under pressure when investors began demanding their money back and he faced legal action in the 2016 murder of Yogesh Singh. He allegedly devised the fake-death plan to evade the police and court.
How accused used AI to fake his death
Additional Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar said Rajbhar staged his death in Ghazipur on May 30, 2025. After a goat died, he allegedly organised its funeral using traditional rituals and staged a funeral procession. He then used artificial intelligence to create a manipulated image that showed his own face on the body of the goat lying on a funeral pyre. The image was meant to convince people that he had died, he said. He also shared the picture on social media to support the story.
Fake death certificate submitted to court
The accused allegedly used the fabricated image and the false story of his death to obtain a death certificate from the Mau Municipal Council. He and his associates later submitted the certificate to the court to establish that the main accused in the murder case was dead. The move, according to the police, was aimed at convincing the court that Rajbhar had died, which could have led to the closure of the case against him. After obtaining the certificate, he allegedly went underground and stayed out of the police’s sight.
Police tracking leads to arrest
The Kotwali Nagar police, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and the surveillance team in Mau jointly investigated the case. Technical surveillance and further inquiries helped investigators uncover the alleged fraud and trace him.The police arrested him near Khwajajahanpur on Sunday. Investigators are now looking into whether other people helped him stage the fake death and how he obtained the death certificate from the municipal council.
Case registered under BNS
A fresh case has been registered against Rajbhar at Kotwali Nagar police station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The allegations include making fraudulent documents and attempting to establish that he was dead. The police are also investigating the role of his associates and the circumstances in which the death certificate was issued. Rajbhar had been facing trial in the 2016 Yogesh Singh murder case and was also accused in alleged financial fraud cases.

The police arrested Rajkumar Rajbhar in Mau after a joint investigation by local police, the SOG and the surveillance team uncovered alleged fraud involving a municipal death certificate submitted to the court. He also faces allegations of cheating investors out of crores of rupees through stock market investment promises.

England and Lancashire legend James Anderson will be leaving his boyhood county after he was informed that he won't be offered a new deal after the end of the 2026 season. Anderson expressed his disappointment over the exit, calling that, had it been up to him, "it wouldn't have ended like this" as he shared a statement on social media. "I've supported Lancashire since I was a kid, and so to get to play for them for 25 years was a dream come true."I have always found it special walking out to play at Old Trafford and have some incredible memories of doing so, including the honour of being captain - if it was up to me it wouldn't have ended like this, but I wish the players and fans all the best for the future," Anderson wrote on his social media.During a meeting last Monday, Lancashire's incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace and newly appointed chief executive Richard Kenyon informed Anderson that he would not be offered a new deal as they cited that they are looking to rebuild their first-team squad. He had intended to play next season after putting up strong performances this season, where he picked 50 wickets at 17.68 and was also named Lancashire's Championship player of the year.Confirming Anderson's departure, Farbrace hailed the legendary speedster. "Jimmy is without doubt the greatest bowler Lancashire and England have produced. He has been a fantastic competitor throughout his career, with exceptional skill and an unwavering commitment to setting the highest standards in every dressing room he has been part of."Following a meeting with Jimmy and Richard Kenyon at Emirates Old Trafford on Monday 19 October, I spoke to Jimmy about our ambitions to rebuild our men's squad that is capable of securing promotion from Division Two of the County Championship and then challenging to win Division One over the next three to four years. He reasoned that the club is looking to build a new squad and that Anderson was informed that he won't be given a contract for the next season. "We are keen to begin that rebuild now, both in terms of the playing squad and the wider professional cricket set-up, and to make important progress over the coming months. As part of those plans, I informed Jimmy that we had taken the incredibly difficult decision not to extend his playing contract for the 2027 season."I would like to thank Jimmy for everything he has given to Lancashire Cricket over the course of his career. His contribution to the Club has been immense, both on and off the field, and he leaves a lasting legacy. We have enormous respect for what he has achieved, and we will always be proud that he has represented Lancashire for so many years," he added.Anderson's England career also came to an end in 2024 without his choice. The then England head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes had decided that he was not in their plans.Anderson is England's highest wicket-taker in Test cricket and is also the most successful fast bowler in the format, having taken 704 wickets in 188 matches. He made his Lancashire debut in 2001 before he won his first England cap the following year. He has 443 wickets in 112 first-class appearances for the county, and 83 wickets in 61 List A cricket matches and 50 in 40 T20 games for the club.

James Anderson expressed his disappointment over the Lancashire exit, stating that, had it been up to him, it wouldnt have ended like this as he shared a statement on social media.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said using terrorism as an instrument of statecraft was unacceptable and could never be justified, warning that the threat persisted because some states continued to put political interests ahead of efforts to combat it.Addressing the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan, held to mark United Nations Day, Jaishankar called for greater global awareness of the threat and a stronger collective response to terrorism in all its forms."Terrorism is another deadly threat to peace. Its usage as an instrument of statecraft is simply unacceptable. It can never be justified; it can never be rationalised. Yet, it continues because not all states really display zero-tolerance. Despite history holding so many lessons, some still allow political calculations to take precedence," he said."The world must, therefore, develop sharper awareness about this common threat. And it must come together with stronger resolve and counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," he added.Referring to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, the External Affairs Minister said peace was indivisible in an interconnected world, with people far removed from the fighting also bearing its consequences."We cannot remain helpless spectators. India expresses global sentiment when we urge that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solution. We are making efforts ourselves and are open to working with other partners to that end," Jaishankar said.Highlighting the "4F crisis" of finance, fuel, food and fertiliser affecting the Global South, he said the Global North also had a stake in finding solutions."The international economy must be urgently de-risked and nations provided with more diversified options. Market distortions through constriction and chokepoints only add to suffering. A genuine dialogue in this regard is overdue," he said.On Artificial Intelligence (AI), Jaishankar said a technology with such far-reaching consequences could not be left in the hands of a few. He reiterated India's support for an approach that is responsible, inclusive and centred on people.Calling for reforms at the United Nations, he said the need for reformed multilateralism was becoming more urgent, with large parts of the world still excluded from decision-making."The case for reformed multilateralism gets stronger by the day. Large parts of the world cannot be left out from decision-making. The UN must show leadership; not be a spectator to global crises," he said.(With IANS inputs)

Jerusalem: In an election that could decide Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future after years of war and criticism of his government’s handling of national security, Israel will vote on Tuesday (October 27). With around 13% of voters still undecided, rival parties are trying to win over people who could determine the balance of power in the next Knesset. US President Donald Trump has backed Netanyahu, who is seeking another term as prime minister. He has said that he is concerned about the election result but will not retire if he loses. The contest has become especially important for centrist challenger Gadi Eisenkot, whose Yashar party is seeking support from voters who backed Netanyahu’s Likud party in the 2022 election. Recent polling suggests that Netanyahu’s coalition could struggle to secure a parliamentary majority, while Opposition parties also face difficulties in putting together a government.
How is Israel’s government formed?
Israel follows a parliamentary system. The Knesset is the country’s legislature. It has 120 seats, and a government needs the support of at least 61 lawmakers to command a majority. The country uses proportional representation, which means seats are allocated according to the votes parties receive across the country, subject to an electoral threshold. No single party has ever won enough seats to govern alone. Coalition negotiations therefore play an important role in forming a government. After the results are announced, President Isaac Herzog consults political parties before asking a candidate considered best placed to form a government to take the lead. The candidate is given 28 days to form a coalition. The deadline can be extended by up to 14 days.If the first candidate fails, the president can give another lawmaker an opportunity. If those efforts also fail, further parliamentary steps may follow, potentially leading to another election. The results are expected on November 4, while preliminary results should be available after voting ends. Israel’s political history shows how difficult coalition-building can be. The country held five elections between 2019 and 2022 after parties repeatedly failed to establish a stable government.
Netanyahu’s challenge among undecided voters
The Israel Democracy Institute’s Viterbi Family Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research estimates that about 13% of voters have not decided whom to support. Among people who voted for Likud in 2022, only 55% now say they plan to vote for the party again.Around 15% of these former Likud voters say they will back parties opposed to Netanyahu, including 8% who favour Yashar. Another 14% say they will vote for other right-wing parties, while 9% are still undecided. Michal Elmalem Abu, a city council member elected from Likud who is now leading Eisenkot’s campaign in Dimona, said that Netanyahu had a core of loyal supporters who were unlikely to change their minds. The main contest, she said, was for voters who “understand that we are in a state of crisis” and could be persuaded to support another party.Dimona, a town in the Negev Desert with a long history of support for Likud, has become an important battleground. Some former Likud voters are campaigning for Eisenkot, blaming Netanyahu for the security failures surrounding Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack. Other residents continue to support the prime minister, crediting his governments with investment in their communities.
Rain forecast on polling day
Southern and eastern Israel are expected to see cooler weather and rain. Heavier showers, thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail are forecast for the afternoon.Flash floods are a particular risk in dry riverbeds in the Negev and Arava regions and around the Dead Sea. However, polling stations are scheduled to remain open for 15 hours. Voters can cast their ballots before or after periods of rain.Israel’s election calendar takes seasonal conditions into account. As per the 1959 amendment to the Basic Law, the Knesset set the usual election period after the Tishrei religious holidays and before the coldest part of winter. If Tuesday’s vote takes place as scheduled, it will be the first Israeli general election held on its legally prescribed date since 1988. The election date of October 27 was confirmed after the Knesset’s legal adviser said that the ongoing parliament would complete its full term.

Israel’s proportional representation system makes coalition deals crucial, while polling data shows uncertainty among former Likud supporters and an uncertain political future for Netanyahu.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma etched her name into the record books on Sunday with a commanding unbeaten 106 off 86 balls in the second women’s ODI against Zimbabwe at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. Walking to the crease in the middle overs, Deepti produced a counter-attacking batting masterclass and became the first Indian woman to score a One-Day International (ODI) century batting at No. 6 or lower. The 26-year-old Deepti surpassed Richa Ghosh's previous best of 94 against South Africa in Visakhapatnam during the 2025 ODI World Cup to completely alter the momentum of the innings. ALSO READ: BWF French Open: PV Sindhu finishes runner-up after losing to An Se Young in women’s singles final India's Recovery After Early CollapseIndia recovered from an early collapse to post a formidable 328/6, with Deepti’s knock and captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s 126 off 121 balls forming the backbone of the innings. The pair of Deepti and Harmanpreet shared a 153-run stand (off 137 balls) for the fifth wicket - India's highest partnership for the fifth wicket or lower in women’s ODIs, bettering the 122-run association between Sneh Rana and Pooja Vastrakar against Pakistan at the 2022 World Cup.Recovery After Early SetbacksIndia slipped to 19/2 early on, with Smriti Mandhana dismissed for a duck. After further wickets, Deepti walked in at 148/4 in the 24th over. She and Harmanpreet steadied the ship before accelerating.Harmanpreet, dropped three times, reached her eighth ODI hundred - moving past Mithali Raj’s tally of seven to become India’s second-highest century-maker in the format behind Smriti Mandhana. She was eventually dismissed at 300.Deepti finished the job. She began the 49th over on 97 and brought up her hundred two balls later with a boundary off Tendai Makusha, remaining unbeaten on 106 (15 fours). Calling it a “fake and baseless linguistic superiority”, Javed Akhtar challenged those questioning her pronunciation to try speaking a few lines in Tamil themselves.Taking to his official X (Earlier known as Twitter) timeline, Akhtar wrote, “Those who have any problem with the pronunciation of Tamil actor Rashmika should be given a few lines of Tamil which is the oldest spoken language in the world and let’s see how well they pronounce Tamil. Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar slammed critics trolling Rashmika Mandannas accent as baseless linguistic superiority, though social media users quickly corrected him for misidentifying the Kannada-origin star as a Tamil actor.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of putting up fake posters claiming that the Congress will win more than 200 seats in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He has also questioned the role of municipal officials in allowing the posters to appear across Lucknow and warned that those responsible would be held accountable if the PDA government comes to power in the state. The posters read, “200 seat haq hai mahara, UP ko hai Rahul Gandhi par bhadosa (200 seats are our right, UP trusts Rahul Gandhi).” They feature Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, along with photographs of local party leaders. The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress have not formally announced an alliance for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Seat-sharing between the two parties is a point of contention. They have not even formally announced an alliance. In a post on X, Akhilesh alleged that the BJP was unsettled by the possibility of an alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress. He claimed that the posters were part of a plot to create confusion around the Opposition parties.“‘Gathbandhan’ has upset the BJP. It is putting up ‘fake posters’ because it is so scared,” he wrote.
— Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) October 25, 2026
He also called for senior municipal officials in the state to be suspended, alleging that posters had been put up publicly without the required payment of fees and that no action had been taken. He said that the posters could have caused a loss to local government revenue if they had been installed without paying the prescribed charges. He argued that an official payment would have generated a receipt and helped establish the identity of those behind the posters. He alleged that the failure to act could point to either corruption or pressure from the state government. Akhilesh demanded an investigation and said officials responsible for any revenue loss should be made to compensate for it.
‘PDA government will demand answers’
He said that the Samajwadi Party was keeping a record of such incidents, including the dates on which they occurred and the officials responsible at the time.“We are keeping a date-wise record of all such incidents and also recording which officer was responsible at the time,” he wrote. He added that a PDA government would investigate the alleged wrongdoing and hold officials accountable. PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) refers to the Samajwadi Party's political outreach to backward classes, Dalits and minorities. He said that agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), would be activated to investigate alleged corruption involving officials.“The PDA government is coming to Uttar Pradesh. It will expose the entire record of these corrupt officials,” Akhilesh wrote. The posters have appeared in Lucknow ahead of the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, which is scheduled for 2027.

Akhilesh Yadav has demanded an inquiry into the posters, alleging that they were put up without municipal fees and accusing officials of allowing a possible loss to public revenue. He has warned that a PDA government would investigate those responsible.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event in Patna, accusing the opposition party of repeatedly crossing the limits of political decency. Kharge's comment, made during the 139th birth anniversary celebration of former Bihar chief minister Dr Shri Krishna Singh, triggered a political row, with the Congress chief also targeting the BJP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Centre's handling of black money. In a post on X, Shah said Kharge had "torn apart all norms of decorum" by making an "indecent remark" about the Prime Minister's father. He accused the Congress of repeatedly using abusive language against Modi and his family."This is not the first time that the Congress party has used abusive language against Modi ji or his family. At times, they have hurled insults at his revered mother, at times called him 'merchant of death,' and at times mocked his poverty by calling him 'chaiwala.' Under Rahul Gandhi's leadership, the Congress party keeps crossing the limits of indecency every day," Shah wrote. The Home Minister further said repeated electoral defeats had left the Congress frustrated and without any policy or issues to raise, adding that the party was losing public support as well as the confidence of its own workers."In the past 12 years, the repeated electoral defeats have bred such desperation and frustration in the Congress party that it no longer has any policy left, nor any issue; only the politics of slander remains," he said.Shah added that voters had consistently responded to what he described as hateful comments against Modi and his family by the Congress.
What Did Kharge Say In Patna?
A commotion broke out during Kharge's address at the event in Patna on Sunday after a person in the audience reportedly said that Prime Minister Modi would not go anywhere.Responding to the remark, Kharge said, "Modi ka baap bhi jayega."The Congress president also accused the Prime Minister of making false promises, citing his pledge to bring back black money within the first 100 days of his government."PM Modi has a habit of telling lies. He had said that he would bring back black money in his first 100 days. I want to ask, where is that money?" Kharge said. His remarks drew criticism from the BJP, with Shah accusing the Congress of allowing political discourse to sink to an unacceptable level.
Kharge Targets RSS, Questions Nitish Kumar's Political Shift
During his address, Kharge launched an attack on the RSS and its ideology, claiming that the organisation's activities had contributed to communal divisions."As long as the ideology of the RSS persists in this country, there will be no peace," he said. The Congress chief argued that criticism of the RSS was rooted in what he described as its long-standing activities."If we speak about the RSS today, people might interpret it differently...well, the reason you are being targeted is that you have been engaged in this very same activity ever since your inception; that is why you are being targeted. Therefore, as long as the ideology of the RSS persists in this country, there will be no peace," Kharge said.He also criticised former Bihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar for joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), saying the move went against the socialist principles on which Kumar had built his political career."Even today, the RSS-BJP is rife with people who harbour notions of untouchability and hold views that run counter to the Constitution. It saddens me that Nitish Kumar, who entered the political scene carrying the ideology of the Socialist Party, has ended up in the lap of the BJP and the RSS. This is what happens when a person becomes weak and abandons their ideology," Kharge said.
Kharge Condemns Haldwani Purification Ritual
Kharge also condemned an incident in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, where members of a right-wing group allegedly carried out a shuddhikaran (purification) ritual at a venue near a temple following a Congress rally at Ramlila Ground.Referring to the incident, which reportedly took place on August 8, 2026, Kharge questioned how social unity could be achieved if practices associated with untouchability continued decades after Independence."On August 8, 2026, in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, a purification ritual was performed for the stage located near a temple. 80 years after Independence, how will there be unity if untouchability prevails?" he said.Congress leaders had criticised the ritual, alleging that it amounted to untouchability.
Kharge Questions Amit Shah's '30 Years' Remark
In a separate exchange, Kharge responded to Shah's claim that the Congress and Rahul Gandhi would not come to power for the next 30 years, questioning the basis for the prediction and accusing the Home Minister of trying to mislead the public."Who will even be around in 30 years? He says all this for one reason: to mislead people," Kharge said. The Congress president also raised allegations concerning electronic voting machines (EVMs) and appointments to key positions, claiming that people loyal to Shah had been placed in influential roles."As long as he has these EVMs, and as long as he has his own loyalists planted in those positions, that is the basis for his claims," Kharge said.He further alleged that even people within Shah's camp had raised concerns about possible wrongdoing."Even his own people have said that there is foul play," he added. The exchange has added to the ongoing political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP, with both sides trading accusations over political conduct, electoral processes and the country's ideological direction.(With agencies' inputs)

The Home Minister further said repeated electoral defeats had left the Congress frustrated and without any policy or issues to raise, adding that the party was losing public support as well as the confidence of its own workers.

Patna: A man who interrupted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge during an event in Patna was beaten up by party workers after his statement was allegedly misunderstood. Santosh Kumar, who was forced out of the auditorium, later said that he belonged to the Congress and had been protesting against the Narendra Modi government. The incident took place during a programme marking the 139th birth anniversary of former Bihar Chief Minister Shri Krishna Singh. Kharge was addressing the gathering when Kumar interrupted him and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not leave office until there was a revolt in the country. His words were apparently interpreted as a statement that Modi would not leave power. The Congress president responded from the stage, saying, "Modi ka baap bhi jayega (Even Modi’s father won’t be able to save him)."Congress workers then confronted Kumar, assaulted him and escorted him out of the auditorium. As he was being taken out, he questioned that why people across the country were opposing the prime minister if there was no widespread dissatisfaction with the government. He said that he had raised his objection to the policies of the Modi government and expected the Congress to take a stronger stand against it.He alleged that the government had been playing with the interests of the country, society and its people. When journalists asked whom he believed the government was harming, he accused the Modi government of treating the country's population of around 144 crore people as a spectacle over the past 12 years. He said that he had interrupted Kharge to convey his opposition to the government's policies. According to Kumar, the Congress is the country's second-largest political party and should lead a stronger resistance against the government. He said that the people in the auditorium mistook him for a BJP supporter. He claimed that this misunderstanding led to the assault. He said that he had expected the Congress to take a more forceful position against the Modi government. In his view, the Opposition would have to mount a sustained and determined challenge to bring about a change in government. When reporters asked why Congress workers had attacked him if he was opposing the prime minister, he repeated that those present had misunderstood his remarks and assumed he belonged to the BJP.

Santosh Kumar said he interrupted Mallikarjun Kharge to demand stronger opposition to the Narendra Modi government. He alleged that Congress workers assaulted him because they mistook him for a BJP supporter.
