Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of putting up fake posters claiming that the Congress will win more than 200 seats in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He has also questioned the role of municipal officials in allowing the posters to appear across Lucknow and warned that those responsible would be held accountable if the PDA government comes to power in the state.

The posters read, “200 seat haq hai mahara, UP ko hai Rahul Gandhi par bhadosa (200 seats are our right, UP trusts Rahul Gandhi).” They feature Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, along with photographs of local party leaders.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress have not formally announced an alliance for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event in Patna, accusing the opposition party of repeatedly crossing the limits of political decency. Kharge's comment, made during the 139th birth anniversary celebration of former Bihar chief minister Dr Shri Krishna Singh, triggered a political row, with the Congress chief also targeting the BJP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Centre's handling of black money.

In a post on X, Shah said Kharge had "torn apart all norms of decorum" by making an "indecent remark" about the Prime Minister's father. He accused the Congress of repeatedly using abusive language against Modi and his family.

"This is not the first time that the Congress party has used abusive language against Modi ji or his family. At times, they have hurled insults at his revered mother, at times called him 'merchant of death,' and at times mocked his poverty by calling him 'chaiwala.' Under Rahul Gandhi's leadership, the Congress party keeps crossing the limits of indecency every day," Shah wrote.

The Home Minister further said repeated electoral defeats had left the Congress frustrated and without any policy or issues to raise, adding that the party was losing public support as well as the confidence of its own workers.

"In the past 12 years, the repeated electoral defeats have bred such desperation and frustration in the Congress party that it no longer has any policy left, nor any issue; only the politics of slander remains," he said.

Shah added that voters had consistently responded to what he described as hateful comments against Modi and his family by the Congress.

What Did Kharge Say In Patna?

A commotion broke out during Kharge's address at the event in Patna on Sunday after a person in the audience reportedly said that Prime Minister Modi would not go anywhere.

Responding to the remark, Kharge said, "Modi ka baap bhi jayega."

The Congress president also accused the Prime Minister of making false promises, citing his pledge to bring back black money within the first 100 days of his government.

"PM Modi has a habit of telling lies. He had said that he would bring back black money in his first 100 days. I want to ask, where is that money?" Kharge said.

His remarks drew criticism from the BJP, with Shah accusing the Congress of allowing political discourse to sink to an unacceptable level.

Kharge Targets RSS, Questions Nitish Kumar's Political Shift

During his address, Kharge launched an attack on the RSS and its ideology, claiming that the organisation's activities had contributed to communal divisions.

"As long as the ideology of the RSS persists in this country, there will be no peace," he said.

The Congress chief argued that criticism of the RSS was rooted in what he described as its long-standing activities.

"If we speak about the RSS today, people might interpret it differently...well, the reason you are being targeted is that you have been engaged in this very same activity ever since your inception; that is why you are being targeted. Therefore, as long as the ideology of the RSS persists in this country, there will be no peace," Kharge said.

He also criticised former Bihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar for joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), saying the move went against the socialist principles on which Kumar had built his political career.

"Even today, the RSS-BJP is rife with people who harbour notions of untouchability and hold views that run counter to the Constitution. It saddens me that Nitish Kumar, who entered the political scene carrying the ideology of the Socialist Party, has ended up in the lap of the BJP and the RSS. This is what happens when a person becomes weak and abandons their ideology," Kharge said.

Kharge Condemns Haldwani Purification Ritual

Kharge also condemned an incident in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, where members of a right-wing group allegedly carried out a shuddhikaran (purification) ritual at a venue near a temple following a Congress rally at Ramlila Ground.

Referring to the incident, which reportedly took place on August 8, 2026, Kharge questioned how social unity could be achieved if practices associated with untouchability continued decades after Independence.

"On August 8, 2026, in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, a purification ritual was performed for the stage located near a temple. 80 years after Independence, how will there be unity if untouchability prevails?" he said.

Congress leaders had criticised the ritual, alleging that it amounted to untouchability.

Kharge Questions Amit Shah's '30 Years' Remark

In a separate exchange, Kharge responded to Shah's claim that the Congress and Rahul Gandhi would not come to power for the next 30 years, questioning the basis for the prediction and accusing the Home Minister of trying to mislead the public.

"Who will even be around in 30 years? He says all this for one reason: to mislead people," Kharge said.

The Congress president also raised allegations concerning electronic voting machines (EVMs) and appointments to key positions, claiming that people loyal to Shah had been placed in influential roles.

"As long as he has these EVMs, and as long as he has his own loyalists planted in those positions, that is the basis for his claims," Kharge said.

He further alleged that even people within Shah's camp had raised concerns about possible wrongdoing.

"Even his own people have said that there is foul play," he added.

The exchange has added to the ongoing political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP, with both sides trading accusations over political conduct, electoral processes and the country's ideological direction.

(With agencies' inputs)

The Home Minister further said repeated electoral defeats had left the Congress frustrated and without any policy or issues to raise, adding that the party was losing public support as well as the confidence of its own workers.

Patna: A man who interrupted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge during an event in Patna was beaten up by party workers after his statement was allegedly misunderstood. Santosh Kumar, who was forced out of the auditorium, later said that he belonged to the Congress and had been protesting against the Narendra Modi government.

The incident took place during a programme marking the 139th birth anniversary of former Bihar Chief Minister Shri Krishna Singh. Kharge was addressing the gathering when Kumar interrupted him and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not leave office until there was a revolt in the country.

His words were apparently interpreted as a statement that Modi would not leave power. The Congress president responded from the stage, saying, "Modi ka baap bhi jayega (Even Modi’s father won’t be able to save him)."

Congress workers then confronted Kumar, assaulted him and escorted him out of the auditorium.

As he was being taken out, he questioned that why people across the country were opposing the prime minister if there was no widespread dissatisfaction with the government. He said that he had raised his objection to the policies of the Modi government and expected the Congress to take a stronger stand against it.

He alleged that the government had been playing with the interests of the country, society and its people. When journalists asked whom he believed the government was harming, he accused the Modi government of treating the country's population of around 144 crore people as a spectacle over the past 12 years.

He said that he had interrupted Kharge to convey his opposition to the government's policies. According to Kumar, the Congress is the country's second-largest political party and should lead a stronger resistance against the government.

He said that the people in the auditorium mistook him for a BJP supporter. He claimed that this misunderstanding led to the assault.

He said that he had expected the Congress to take a more forceful position against the Modi government.
New Delhi: Former CIA Director David Petraeus has warned that militaries have little time to adapt to modern warfare. Drones, autonomous weapons and frequent software updates are changing battlefield tactics and the way soldiers fight and survive.

He said the war between Russia and Ukraine had demonstrated how fast new technology could make established military tactics ineffective. He argued that armed forces must overhaul their training, equipment and decision-making processes at a pace that traditional military procurement systems often cannot match.

Petraeus has commanded US-led coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and served as head of US Central Command, which oversees American military operations across a region stretching from Egypt to Pakistan. His experience in these roles has given him first-hand knowledge of how military strategy changes during prolonged confrontations.

“The high-tech drone war between Russia and Ukraine shows one of the biggest changes in the way wars are fought in our time. Every military in the world needs to understand how important revolutionary institutional change has become,” Petraeus said while addressing the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi.

His warning comes as countries, including India, assess the rising use of drones for surveillance, attacks and air defence. The war in Ukraine has shown that relatively inexpensive unmanned systems can threaten tanks, troops, supply routes and naval vessels. Militaries now have to rethink how they deploy their forces.

Why old war tactics no longer work

Drones and smart weapons have changed the way infantry and armoured units operate along the Russia-Ukraine front. Surveillance drones can detect troops and vehicles from above, allowing forces to direct attacks against targets that would previously have been difficult to locate.

Soldiers stationed along Ukraine's line of contact spend much of their time underground to avoid detection. Supplies are delivered through remotely operated ground vehicles and drones instead of conventional trucks. Troops may spend as long as 60 days at their positions because travelling to and from the front can expose them to enemy attacks.

Petraeus said that conventional military formations and battlefield methods could become easy targets in an environment where drones can identify movement across open ground.

“Traditional warfare, tanks, infantry, engineers, air defence, electronic warfare... all of these can no longer survive in their existing form. Even if you have built trenches, a drone can be flown into them. Anything out in the open will be easily visible," he said.

He said military leaders must find ways to protect troops and equipment while allowing forces to move, communicate and receive supplies under constant surveillance.

‘Armies must adapt within a year’

Petraeus believes the lessons from Ukraine must be adopted much faster by armed forces around the world. He said that Russia and Ukraine were changing battlefield tactics at a pace that other countries had not matched.

Asked what he would do if given five years to rebuild a modern military, he said the job would have to be completed in a year.

"The first thing I would say is that this will not be done in five years, but in one year, because we do not have five years," he said.

The process involves more than buying different types of drones. Militaries must also update the software that controls these systems and modify their hardware to respond to new battlefield threats.

Petraeus said armed forces should be able to make software changes every week and hardware changes every few weeks.

Such a pace poses a challenge for countries where defence procurement can take years, from selecting a weapon system to completing trials and bringing it into service. By the time a system is deployed, the technology and tactics used by an adversary may have changed.

Will AI drones decide who lives or dies?

Petraeus expects faster advances in autonomous weapons. These systems can identify and attack targets with limited or no human intervention. He said that fully autonomous systems were at the experimental stage, but their numbers could increase considerably by the end of 2026 or during 2027.

Asked whether he was comfortable with machines making decisions that could determine whether a person lived or died, he said that he trusted a properly programmed machine to follow the laws of war.

"If a machine has been programmed correctly, I have confidence that it will follow the laws of war. And that 'if it has been programmed correctly' part matters a great deal," he said.

His answer also shows why the design and testing of these weapons are so important. The ability of an autonomous system to distinguish between military targets and civilians, follow rules of engagement and operate reliably will determine how it is used in combat.

Ukraine's drones take on costly missiles

The war has opened a new front, with drones being used to destroy other drones. Ukraine has stepped up its use of interceptor drones to shoot down Russian unmanned aircraft, including Shahed-type attack drones.

In January 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country was producing about 1,000 interceptor drones a day. His military chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that these systems destroyed more than 1,500 Russian drones in February 2026, including a substantial share of the Shahed drones launched towards Kyiv.

According to Reuters, interceptor drones were bringing down around 40% of Russia's Shahed-type drones across Ukraine by April, compared with about 25% during the winter.

The economics of air defence have helped drive this change. Petraeus said that some militaries had used Patriot missiles costing about $2 million each to destroy Shahed drones priced at around $50,000. Repeatedly using expensive missiles against cheaper targets places a heavy burden on defence budgets and can fast exhaust supplies.

Interceptor drones offer a less expensive way to counter some incoming threats, although their effectiveness depends on the type of target, detection systems and battlefield conditions.

How Ukraine's drones hit Russia's Black Sea fleet

Ukraine's use of unmanned systems has also changed naval warfare. Despite lacking a conventional navy comparable to Russia's, Kyiv has used aerial and sea drones to attack Russian vessels in the Black Sea.

Petraeus said that Ukraine had destroyed more than a third of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Aerial drones help locate targets, while unmanned surface vessels carry out attacks against the ships. The threat has forced Russian vessels to operate from ports and other protected locations rather than move freely across the open sea, he said.

He also stated that Ukraine had sunk around 300 vessels carrying supplies to Crimea and attacked refineries within a range of 3,000 kilometres from its borders.

The use of relatively inexpensive unmanned systems against warships and energy infrastructure has added another challenge for military strategists. Navies now have to protect ships and ports against threats that can approach at low cost, operate without crews and be deployed in large numbers.

Petraeus says the Ukraine war has exposed weaknesses in conventional military systems. Costly air defence missiles and vulnerable naval fleets show how drones are changing modern combat.

All four are from Chach Jaan Khan village in Sindh.

The group had crossed into Indian waters to catch crabs, a common fishing activity in the region's shallow creeks, as per media reports. BSF personnel acted after receiving specific information about their presence. A Pakistani fishing boat was recovered during the operation. Authorities have not publicly given details of the vessel's registration, the equipment found aboard or the next legal steps.

Why is the Sir Creek area sensitive for India and Pakistan?

Sir Creek is a narrow stretch of water and mudflats near the Arabian Sea. It separates parts of Gujarat's Kutch region from Sindh and is associated with a longstanding boundary dispute between India and Pakistan.

Unlike a clearly marked land crossing, the area contains tidal channels and waterlogged ground, making it difficult for fishing crews to identify where one country's waters end and the other's begin.

The same terrain makes surveillance demanding for border personnel. Shifting tides, shallow waterways and stretches of marshland can limit movement on foot or by boat. The BSF patrols the region to detect unauthorised entries and other cross-border activity, while fishing boats sometimes appear in the waterways close to the border.

BSF security surveillance in Gujarat's Kutch region

In May 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inspected BSF facilities around Sir Creek and Harami Nala.

He reviewed surveillance arrangements and visited a border outpost during the inspection. The visit came amid efforts to improve monitoring in sections of the border where the terrain complicates routine patrols.

Previous Pakistani fishing boat seizures near Sir Creek

Sunday's detention is not the first involving Pakistani fishermen in the Kutch creeks. In May 2026, BSF personnel found an abandoned suspected Pakistani boat near the maritime border. Fishing gear was recovered, but officials reported no suspicious material in the initial inspection.

Notably, such incidents have occurred repeatedly in the region, where fishing grounds lie close to the international border. Fishermen sometimes cross into restricted waters, although the circumstances of individual crossings can differ.

Further information about the case is awaited from the authorities.

Also Read: Congress alleges manipulation in SIR, seeks CEC exit over ECINET software row

The Congress on Sunday accused the Election Commission of withholding technical details about the software used to examine voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), alleging that the refusal was aimed at hiding manipulation of electoral rolls.

Also Read: Kerala cafe controversy - YouTuber booked for outrage over Gandhi-Jinnah artwork and beef menu

The party’s charge followed an RTI reply in which the poll body cited legal exemptions for protecting software-related information. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Commission’s response had damaged public confidence in the revision exercise.

Jairam Ramesh, who holds the party’s communications portfolio, referred to a Hindustan Times report on a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Telangana-based social activist MA Mujeeb Ayyub. In its reply dated October 16, the Election Commission declined to disclose the name and version of the software used to identify errors and inconsistencies in electoral rolls.

Election Commission cites trade secrets in RTI reply

The applicant had also sought to know whether artificial intelligence (AI) or other automated tools were used to check voter records, mark names for correction or deletion and protect genuine voters from incorrect warnings.

The Commission, however, invoked Section 8(1)(d) of the RTI Act, which protects commercially sensitive information, including trade secrets and intellectual property. It said the questions on AI, automatic checks and safeguards sought clarification rather than information covered under the law.

For a separate question on who reviews suspected errors, the Commission cited another exemption relating to personal safety and confidential sources. At the same time, it clarified that no new software had been developed or purchased specifically for the SIR.

The Commission maintained that the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) in each constituency was legally responsible for deciding whether a person's name should be included in or removed from the voter list. It said such decisions were based on documents and other records.

Ramesh Questions AI Use and TCS Role in ECINET

In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh accused the Commission of using "flimsy excuses" to avoid disclosing how the ECINET system works. He alleged that the software had enabled central control over voter lists and linked this to what he called "massive, centralised manipulation" during the SIR.

"The lack of transparency around the ECINET software and the use of AI has damaged the credibility of the entire process among citizens," he wrote.

Jairam Ramesh also questioned why people had learnt about Tata Consultancy Services' alleged role in developing ECINET through the company's disclosures rather than from the Election Commission. He claimed that AI had been used during the revision.

The Election Commission of India continues to hide information about the controversial ECINET software at the heart of the disastrous SIR, that has been used to centralise manipulation of the electoral rolls. Today, a leading national daily revealed that the ECI has refused to provide information on the software being used in the SIR in its response to a Right to Information (RTI) application. Using flimsy excuses, the ECI has refused to name the software being used in the SIR, or confirm whether AI is being used and what safeguards are in place. The lack of transparency around the ECINET software and the use of AI has damaged the credibility of the entire process among citizens. The ECI is repeatedly refusing to provide this information because it will reveal the reality of the massive, centralised manipulation that has taken place. •Why did Indians find out from disclosures of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) that they developed the ECINET software? Why has this not been transparently disclosed by the ECI? •Why has the ECI repeatedly denied the use of AI in the SIR and electoral roll revision, when it is clearly being used? The ECINET software and the IT Division of the ECI were the focus of several objections raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The complaints even reached the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which comes under the Prime Minister himself. The public knows that massive manipulation has taken place. The two commissioners also reportedly wrote to the Cabinet Secretary about changes in officials' responsibilities.

Jairam Ramesh claimed the objections had reached the Department of Personnel and Training. The Election Commission, however, said the letters concerned the work of an officer on deputation and were not related to its IT policy.

Election Commission Defends ECINET

In a statement issued on September 26, the Commission said authorised field officers had access to ECINET according to their legal duties.
New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, has said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the force’s ability to strike targets up to 200 kilometres inside the enemy territory across a 1,200-kilometre stretch of the western front. He said the operation proved that no target was beyond the IAF’s reach and that the force could carry out precise strikes whenever required.

“On the offensive side, calibrated targeting across the entire front, spanning 1,200 km in breadth and 200 km in depth, made it clear that no place is beyond the IAF's reach,” he said in an interview on Sunday (October 25).

He said the military offensive validated the IAF’s capability-based approach to warfare and demonstrated its role in responding swiftly to a crisis and deterring enemy attacks. The operation began in May last year in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. India carried out precision strikes against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The action was among India's most ambitious cross-border military operations since the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

Singh, who commanded the operation for four days, said that the experience had strengthened the case for building a force around a range of integrated military capabilities. He also emphasised the need to continue improving the IAF's operational strength.

“Operation Sindoor has proved that the path we have chosen is the right one. We will continue on this path with even greater determination so that, if the country needs us again, the Indian Air Force can act even faster and with greater precision and decisiveness on the country's terms,” he said.

How Operation Sindoor combined military strength

Singh said that the operation's success came from the combined use of intelligence, network-based operations, precision weapons, electronic warfare and air defence systems. The IAF also used weapons capable of striking targets from outside the enemy's effective firing range and systems built to counter unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

He said that no single aircraft or weapon system could take credit for the outcome. The operation involved several platforms and technologies working together as one system.

“Operation Sindoor was primarily a validation of the capability-based approach of the Air Force. We have started thinking in terms of capabilities rather than individual aircraft and weapon systems, integrating every aircraft, sensor, weapon and network,” he said.

He added that this approach allowed the IAF to respond according to operational requirements and adapt fast when the enemy changed its strategy.

“At the military operations level, the most important lesson is that we must always have multiple options available and maintain the ability to adapt fast to changes in the enemy's strategy,” he said.

According to Singh, a force built around different capabilities can use several options rather than depend on a single weapon or platform. This flexibility helped India determine the nature of its response and prevent the confrontation from escalating, he said.

Indigenous weapons and air defence systems

Singh said some of India's indigenously developed weapons performed exceptionally well during the operation. They hit targets deep in enemy territory and inflicted heavy damage. He also said the IAF ensured that its attacks did not cause damage to civilians or civilian property.

India's indigenous and network-based air defence system also played an important role in countering large numbers of drones and weapons launched by Pakistan, according to the air chief. He said that these defensive capabilities gave the country the confidence to carry out its operations.

The operation, he added, showed the importance of speed, accuracy, integration and the ability to adapt to changing battlefield conditions.

What IAF plans to improve next

Singh said that the IAF must continue strengthening its combat capabilities, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems, electronic warfare, anti-drone technology and secure networks. Artificial intelligence-based decision-support systems will also be important in improving the force's ability to respond to future threats.

He said that the Air Force would need stronger logistics, maintenance facilities and infrastructure to sustain high-intensity military operations over long periods. Increasing domestic production would also be essential to support these requirements.

Singh said that work was already under way across these areas.

The air chief said that the IAF's long-term plans were in line with the national goal of Viksit Bharat 2047. He said that a developed India must also be secure and capable of dealing with crises. The IAF must be able to protect the country's rising economic, technological and strategic interests across different domains of warfare.

Singh said that achieving this goal would require a nationwide effort. The IAF is committed to playing its part. The IAF, he said, aims to become one of the world's most capable, innovative and technologically self-reliant air forces by 2047. It seeks to protect India's security and support its progress.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said that Operation Sindoor validated the Indian Air Force’s capability-based warfare strategy. Indigenous weapons, integrated air defence, electronic warfare and intelligence systems played important roles in the strikes.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday called on the United Nations to lead amid global conflicts and push forward long-pending structural reforms, warning that the international community cannot afford to remain a ‘passive observer’ as wars in Ukraine and West Asia disrupt economies and affect people far beyond the battlefields.

Speaking at the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan on “Non-Dualism for World Understanding” at Bharat Mandapam on the occasion of United Nations Day, EAM S. Jaishankar called for reformed multilateralism, stressing that the global governance system must reflect the realities of the contemporary world and give developing nations a greater role in decision-making.

Jaishankar said the founding of the United Nations after the Second World War reflected a collective decision to prioritise cooperation over competition among nations.

He noted that the debate between countries pursuing their individual interests and those seeking collective solutions had long shaped international relations.

The UN’s establishment 80 years ago was an expression of the world’s commitment to working together, he said.

“Humankind has witnessed perpetual arguments between those who stress competitiveness and others who see a virtue in cooperation. These may be individual or even societal predicaments, but on the global stage, they translate into how nations behave with one another. The collective and cooperative instincts of the world were articulated, were expressed eight decades ago in the founding of the United Nations. It is fitting, therefore, that we gather to advance a sense of oneness as we celebrate the UN Day. After all, whether it is the challenges or the opportunities that confront the world, these can be best, most effectively addressed collectively,” the External Affairs Minister said.

Wars in Ukraine and West Asia affect distant economies

Highlighting the consequences of ongoing conflicts, Jaishankar pointed to the wars in Ukraine and West Asia, saying their economic fallout was being felt well beyond the regions directly involved.

People and economies with little influence over the course of these conflicts are bearing the costs, including through higher fuel and food prices and wider economic disruption, he said.

“There are today two major conflicts going on in the world: in Ukraine and in West Asia or the Middle East. Societies and economies, peoples far away, who have little say in the matter, are actually paying the cost. We cannot remain helpless spectators,” Jaishankar said.

He reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy, rather than military action, offered the way towards resolving conflicts. India is making its own efforts to promote peace and remains willing to work with other countries towards that objective, he added.

“India expresses global sentiment when we urge that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solution. We are making efforts ourselves and are open to working with other partners to that end,” Jaishankar said.

#WATCH | Delhi: At the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan on UN Day, EAM Dr. S. Where the UN is concerned, that means recognising its shortcomings and limitations, and seeking its improvement. The case for reformed multilateralism gets stronger by the day. Large parts of the world cannot be left out of decision-making,” he said.

EAM stressed that recognising the UN’s limitations must go hand in hand with efforts to improve its functioning and strengthen international cooperation.

He called on the organisation to take a more active role in addressing global challenges rather than remaining a bystander as conflicts escalate.

“On this occasion, even as we recognise the need for such long-awaited changes, let us renew our commitment to work together. We are common, we are shared, we are united,” Jaishankar said.

UN day marks 80 years of the organisation

Observed on October 24, United Nations Day commemorates the anniversary of the UN Charter entering into force in 1945. The organisation formally came into existence after the founding document was ratified by a majority of its signatories, including all five permanent members of the Security Council.

The UN was established with the stated aim of preventing future generations from experiencing the devastation of war. Its founding charter opens with a commitment to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”.

Eight decades later, however, questions remain over whether its institutional structure can effectively address contemporary conflicts.

Security council structure under scrutiny

The Security Council remains dominated by the five permanent members, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China, reflecting the balance of power that emerged after the Second World War.

Rising powers such as India, Brazil, Japan and South Africa remain outside the permanent membership, despite representing a substantial share of the world’s population. This imbalance has weakened the council’s legitimacy and its ability to respond effectively to international crises.

The veto power held by each permanent member presents another obstacle. A single permanent member can block a resolution, preventing the council from taking action even when other members support it.

The UN also depends on member states for troops and funding, leaving its operations vulnerable when countries withhold financial contributions or refuse to provide resources.

Conflicts expose limits of UN action

The limitations of the system have become increasingly apparent during conflicts in recent years.

When Russia’s war against Ukraine began, the international community looked to the Security Council for a response. In Gaza, resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire were blocked by the United States, while alternative drafts were blocked by Russia and China. As the council remained divided, the conflict continued.

The UN has also struggled to respond effectively to the civil war in Sudan, the military takeover in Myanmar and the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.

As the organisation’s ability to secure agreement among major powers has weakened, countries have increasingly pursued security cooperation through smaller groupings outside the UN framework, including the Quad, AUKUS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Geopolitical rivalry and funding pressures deepen crisis

Renewed rivalry among major powers has further complicated the Security Council’s work, making consensus increasingly difficult. The UN Secretary-General, once seen as a potential global mediator, has often been left issuing statements that member states are not obliged to follow.

Concerns have also grown over the disregard for international humanitarian law, with UN schools in Gaza, peacekeepers in Lebanon and other UN facilities coming under fire.

Financial constraints have added to the organisation’s difficulties. Major powers have withheld dues as leverage, leaving peacekeeping missions and humanitarian agencies struggling to maintain operations.

The challenges facing the UN have raised questions about its capacity to fulfil the purpose for which it was established in 1945. Jaishankar’s remarks on UN Day underscored India’s call for an organisation that can respond more effectively to global crises rather than remain a helpless spectator to the conflicts it was created to help prevent.

(with ANI inputs)

Jaishankar also called for an overhaul of United Nations Security Council, arguing that the existing framework could no longer justify excluding large parts of the developing world.

Kochi police have registered a case against YouTuber Amrit Singh Darren over a social media video in which he objected to an artwork featuring Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi at a Fort Kochi cafe and criticised the serving of beef there.

Also Read: Election Commission refuses to name SIR software, citing trade secrets in RTI reply

The Fort Kochi police registered the first information report (FIR) against Darren on Saturday under Sections 353(2) and 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The action came after Darren uploaded a video on Instagram around 6 am on October 22. Police said his remarks could provoke tensions between two religious communities.

What the YouTuber Alleged

Darren, who posts on Instagram under the handle "littichokha_up_", said he was surprised to find images of Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, displayed alongside those of Gandhi inside Kashi Art Cafe.

He also objected to beef being served at an establishment named Kashi, a name he associated with Varanasi, the Hindu pilgrimage city in Uttar Pradesh.

In the video, Darren claimed that Muslims controlled 95 per cent of businesses and transport services in Fort Kochi and suggested that some residents were afraid to express their political views.

What the Gandhi-Jinnah Artwork Depicts

The artwork at the centre of the controversy is part of "Blood Brothers: Two Fathers from Gujarat", created by artist Riyas Komu.

Rather than being a standalone tribute to Jinnah, the installation uses repeated aluminium relief portraits of Gandhi and Jinnah to examine their connected histories and the Partition of India.

The cafe's name has also been disputed. According to a report by South First, "Kashi" is derived from the Japanese word for sweets or confectionery, and not from the religious city in Uttar Pradesh.

Cafe manager Jude Vipin told the publication that the menu included buffalo meat, chicken, fish and other dishes. Kashi Art Cafe operates as both a restaurant and an exhibition space and has been part of Fort Kochi's arts scene since 1997.

Why Police Registered the Case

Police said Darren's remarks went beyond criticism of a cafe. The FIR alleges that he linked the menu and artwork to the area's Muslim population in a manner that could promote hostility between communities.

While Section 353(2) of the BNS deals with statements that can promote enmity between groups, Section 192 relates to provocation intended or likely to cause rioting.

Kerala CM, Opposition leader condemn video

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan condemned the video, saying it misrepresented Fort Kochi and sought to divide its communities.

"Communal hatred has no place here," Satheesan wrote on X, adding that the law would take its course. He said the Congress-led United Democratic Front government would act fairly and protect communal harmony.

Keralam stands united.
The Election Commission has refused to identify the software used to spot errors in electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), citing legal protection for trade secrets, according to a report by Hindustan Times on Sunday.

What the RTI applicant wanted to know

The reply, dated October 16, was sent to MA Mujeeb Ayyub, a social activist from Karimnagar in Telangana. He had asked for the name and version of any software or AI platform used to identify irregularities in voter records. He also wanted to know whether the system automatically marks entries for checking, correction or deletion.

Ayyub sought details of safeguards against genuine voters being flagged by mistake and asked who reviews a flagged record before action is taken.

The Commission said that "no new software has been developed or procured for the SIR exercise". It also said electoral registration officers (EROs) make the final decisions on including or excluding voters after examining relevant facts and records.

Why the Election Commission withheld the software details

For the software's identity, the poll body invoked Section 8(1)(d) of the RTI Act, which protects "commercial confidence, trade secrets and intellectual property" under certain conditions. The exemption is not unconditional: the law permits disclosure if the competent authority finds that a larger public interest justifies it.

The Commission treated questions about automated alerts, artificial intelligence, machine learning and protection against incorrect flags as requests for clarification, rather than information covered by Section 2(f) of the RTI Act.

When asked who checks the flagged records, it cited Section 8(1)(g), a provision dealing with threats to personal safety and the protection of confidential sources. It referred to electoral registration officers' legal responsibilities under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

SIR voter list controversy and concerns over software access

The RTI response comes amid separate disputes over the management of voter data. A September investigation by The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had lodged at least 14 written objections over 10 months. Some concerned access to electoral-roll systems and decisions about adding or removing names.

The Election Commission described differing views as part of its internal decision-making process and said its digital systems followed strict security arrangements. The Indian Express also reported that more than 13 crore entries had been removed from draft rolls across 30 states and Union Territories. Draft-roll exclusions should not be confused with final decisions, as electoral lists can change through claims and objections.

Former chief election commissioner OP Rawat told Hindustan Times that the RTI applicant should appeal the refusal. Under Section 19 of the RTI Act, a first appeal can generally be filed within 30 days of receiving a decision.

How voters can check their names during SIR

For ordinary voters, the immediate safeguard is to check that their names appear on the electoral roll. The Election Commission's official search service, electoralsearch.eci.gov.in, allows people to verify their registration details.

The Commission's voters' portal, voters.eci.gov.in, provides Form 6 for registration or a claim for inclusion and Form 8 to correct an existing entry. Anyone who finds an error can contact the electoral registration officer for the constituency or use the relevant online service.

Also Read: France protests turn violent - Nearly 1,000 arrested; Trump blames immigration, Macron hits back

The Congress will strongly reiterate its demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the INDIA bloc’s rally in Delhi on November 1, Haryana Congress in-charge Sanjay Dutt and state unit president Rao Narendra Singh said on Saturday, according to reports.

The leaders emphasised that maintaining the integrity of electoral rolls, ensuring transparency in the electoral process and safeguarding every eligible citizen’s right to vote were essential to the country’s democracy. They asserted that the Congress would not compromise on these principles.

Dutt and Singh said the Congress’s nationwide ‘Vote Bachao Desh Bachao’ campaign had reached a crucial stage, with preparations being stepped up across Haryana to expand its reach to every district, block, village and polling booth.

According to reports, party workers have been instructed to document alleged irregularities in electoral rolls, raise awareness about eligible voters’ rights and mobilise a large contingent from Haryana for the November 1 rally.

The INDIA bloc’s rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan is being projected as the culmination of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march against alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Congress has said that at least 10 lakh people are expected to participate in the march to protest what it describes as ‘vote chori’. The party added that the rally would convey a strong message of unity in defence of democracy and the Constitution.

Dutt described the ‘Vote Bachao Desh Bachao’ rally as part of a nationwide movement to safeguard citizens’ voting rights, strengthen democratic institutions and hold the BJP government accountable.

Dutt and Singh said concerns over the alleged lack of impartiality in the electoral process could not be adequately addressed while Gyanesh Kumar remained in office, asserting that his removal was necessary.

They further stated that if an investigation established his involvement in undermining the democratic system or violating the law, appropriate legal action, including arrest, should be taken.

Dutt questioned the Chief Election Commissioner’s role, stating that the Election Commission had a constitutional duty to ensure transparency and impartiality in the electoral process. He stressed that concerns regarding the potential removal of eligible voters’ names and discrepancies reported during the revision of electoral rolls required serious consideration.

The Congress will press for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s removal at the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally in Delhi, citing alleged electoral irregularities, concerns over the revision of voter rolls and the need to protect democratic rights.

Other alleged associates, including Sahil Ritoli, Naseeb alias Daku Kulasiya and Aman Bhainswal, are also reported to remain outside prison and active.

The arrest could also affect the balance of power among rival criminal groups. However, the impact will depend on whether other members can continue running the network and maintaining its operations from within India or overseas.

What Happens Next? Deportation Or Extradition

Both gangsters are reportedly being held at the Henderson Detention Centre in Nevada. Their return to India could take place through deportation or extradition, depending on the legal circumstances.

If US authorities establish violations of immigration law, including the use of fake passports, deportation may be possible. The recent deportation of Anmol Bishnoi under immigration provisions has also highlighted this route.

India and the US signed an extradition treaty in 1997. Under the process, Indian authorities, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, would submit relevant evidence and court warrants to the US Department of Justice. A US court would examine whether the legal requirements had been met, after which the US Secretary of State would issue the final order.

Red Notices have already been issued against the two men, and their identities have reportedly been verified. Indian agencies are expected to coordinate with their US counterparts on the next steps to bring them back to India.

Lessons From International Crime Syndicates

The arrests also raise questions about the future of the gangs linked to Bhau and Faridpuria. The history of international criminal syndicates shows that the arrest of a leading figure does not always end a network.

Colombia's Medellin Cartel collapsed following the fall of Pablo Escobar, while the Cali Cartel expanded its influence. The arrest of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán also contributed to divisions within Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel. In India, the arrest of Chhota Rajan in Bali in 2015 was followed by a decline in the activities of his syndicate.

Whether Bhau's arrest leads to a similar decline or creates an opening for rival gangs remains to be seen. The arrests of Bhau and Faridpuria, however, underline the role of intelligence-sharing and international cooperation in tracking wanted criminals who attempt to evade justice by moving across borders.

The arrests followed intelligence inputs and technical surveillance by Indian agencies, highlighting growing cooperation between Indian and US law enforcement agencies in tracking wanted criminals operating overseas.

More than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff members of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), along with Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Professor Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, gathered at the university’s Ansari Auditorium lawns on Saturday to discuss the way forward amid ongoing student protests.

The meeting followed four rounds of talks and an appeal issued by a university committee on Friday night urging students to call off their agitation. The gathering came after a week of efforts by a seven-member high-level committee of university professors, constituted on October 18, to mediate with students demanding elections to the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU).

Staff adopt two resolutions

Faculty members and staff expressed dismay over incidents of vandalism and the defacement of campus walls with what they described as highly objectionable slogans. They said such acts undermined the academic atmosphere and the dignity of an institution with a 106-year legacy, according to a university release.

The gathering unanimously adopted two resolutions. The first called on protesting students to vacate the protest site and end their agitation to restore peace and normalcy on campus. The staff particularly objected to the occupation of the Ghalib statue lawns, which they said had been taken over illegally despite Gate No. 18 being the designated protest site.

Under the second resolution, faculty members and staff pledged to repaint the defaced walls and cover slogans they described as highly condemnable and detrimental to the country’s integrity, security and sovereignty.

They warned that the slogans could cause lasting and irreversible damage to JMI’s reputation and standing. The staff stressed that the standing of a historic institution should not be jeopardised by the actions of a handful of individuals, particularly when the consequences could affect the wider university community.

Teachers, describing themselves as key stakeholders who had devoted decades to the institution, said they could not allow the university to be held to ransom. They also voiced concern over what they called falsehoods and misinformation being circulated by students on social media, warning that these could harm the university’s reputation.

BJP, opposition demand probe into 'Free Kashmir' slogans

The controversy over "Free Kashmir" slogans at Jamia Millia Islamia intensified on Saturday, with BJP leaders demanding an investigation and strict action against those responsible. Congress leader Udit Raj also called for a probe, while Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma said the slogans should be investigated separately from the students’ demand for union elections.

Both reiterated that Kashmir is an integral part of India. Meanwhile, students continued their indefinite hunger strike, which entered its 13th day, demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) and elections.

VC, registrar warn of impact on students’ prospects

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Professor Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi expressed serious concern over the defacement of university property and the writing of objectionable slogans threatening the country’s integrity and sovereignty.

They warned that such incidents could damage JMI’s standing and undermine the credibility of its students, potentially affecting their future employment and placement prospects as well as opportunities for higher education.

Addressing the gathering, members of the high-level committee said the university had made swift efforts to address an issue that had remained unresolved for two decades, but the protesting students had continued to resist engagement.

The JMI Students’ Union was suspended in 2006 following recurring incidents of violent clashes, attacks on teachers and occasional disruptions to classes.

The committee said the current administration had promptly notified the formation of a JMISU Constitution Draft Committee on October 21, 2026. It described the move as an initiative that no Vice-Chancellor or Registrar had undertaken since 2006.

Despite this step, students on hunger strike had shown no willingness to engage with the administration to reach an amicable settlement, the committee said.

Disciplinary review fails to bring students to talks

The committee members reiterated that the university had continued reaching out to protesters. On October 21, the administration issued another notification stating that “all disciplinary action taken or initiated against students sitting on protests with causes originating from 12.10.26 till 5:30 pm of 21.10.26 will be reviewed”.

The concession, however, failed to bring the protesters to the negotiating table, according to the release.

The committee said students remained adamant and escalated tensions by inviting leaders and representatives of local, regional and national political parties and groups. Teachers warned that these developments could further worsen the campus atmosphere and lead to chaos, hooliganism, vandalism and additional defacement of university walls.

Teachers’ outreach ends in confrontation

After adopting the resolutions, teaching and non-teaching staff marched from the Ansari Auditorium lawns, passing through Gate No. 13 and crossing the main road to reach Gate No. 7. They then proceeded to the protest site to persuade students to end their agitation.

The staff spent two hours attempting to convince the protesters to call off the demonstration and restore normalcy on campus. However, the students continued chanting slogans and shouting at faculty members to “go back”, the university release said.

The students then allegedly began pushing security guards, staff members and teachers, while refusing to heed repeated appeals from senior faculty members. This happened despite the university having met their demands earlier in the week, according to the release.

The teachers and staff eventually withdrew from the protest site and returned to the Ansari Auditorium.

JMI shifts classes online with immediate effect

Following the day’s developments, the university administration issued a notification announcing that classes across all courses would move online with immediate effect.

The decision was taken in view of the prevailing situation and to ensure the safety and security of the university’s bona fide students.

JMI advised all students to follow their online class schedules and avoid visiting the campus. The university’s gates and libraries will remain closed while classes are held online, until further notice.

(with ANI inputs)

Following the day’s developments, the university administration issued a notification announcing that classes across all courses would move online with immediate effect.
