Nearly 47.6 lakh voters have been left out of Delhi's draft electoral roll, but only 2.51 lakh applications for inclusion were received between August 31 and October 22, even as the deadline for applying is just six days away.

Figures released by the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) show that 2,50,754 Form 6 applications were submitted after the draft roll was published. Another 2,12,400 had arrived before August 31, taking the total number of applications to more than 4.63 lakh.

The revision exercise began on June 30 with about 1.45 crore voters on Delhi’s electoral rolls. By August 31, however, the draft list contained only about 97.5 lakh names. The remaining 47,56,722 voters were classified as absent, shifted, deceased or duplicate after election workers could not collect their enumeration forms.

Why so few Form 6 applications after the Delhi SIR?

Form 6 is used to request inclusion in the electoral roll, both by first-time voters and by eligible residents whose names are missing. Because of this, the total number of applications cannot be treated as the number of people seeking restoration after their names were deleted.

According to Hindustan Times (HT), an election official said nearly half of the fresh applications were from first-time voters. The official argued that the relatively low response, despite extensive outreach, showed that the exercise used to identify absent, shifted, dead and duplicate entries was accurate. However, the application figures alone do not explain why other eligible voters have not applied.

To encourage more people to enrol, special camps began on September 20. Officials said more than 89,000 such camps had been held by October 22, during which 1,58,470 Form 6 applications were received. Another round of camps is scheduled for October 25 at Delhi’s 14,947 polling stations.

West Delhi leads Form 6 applications; New Delhi records fewest

The district-wise figures show wide differences across the capital. West Delhi recorded the highest number of applications at 30,361, followed by North West Delhi with 25,925. East Delhi received 24,200 applications, while North East Delhi and South East Delhi recorded 24,136 and 24,153 respectively.

South West Delhi reported 22,098 applications and South Delhi 21,322. The numbers were 18,451 for North Delhi, 17,991 for Outer North Delhi and 16,312 for Central North Delhi. Central Delhi recorded 10,796 applications, Old Delhi 10,668 and New Delhi just 4,341, the lowest in the city.

Officials said the low number in New Delhi district was partly because many former government employees had moved out of official accommodation, with some shifting to Gurugram or their hometowns. Such voters were advised to register where they now live. Some electors registered in more than one place also reportedly preferred to retain their registration in their home state.

What happens to flagged voters and how to check your name

Apart from those left out of the draft roll, about 33 lakh people whose names appeared in the list faced further scrutiny. Of these, around 13.79 lakh could not be linked to the 2002 electoral roll, while 19.33 lakh records had discrepancies.

The CEO's office said about 29.5 lakh of these cases had been resolved or set aside for a decision in the final roll. It has, however, not disclosed how many were rejected.

Residents have been advised to check their names on the Delhi CEO website instead of assuming they are registered. Those who are eligible but missing from the draft list can apply through Form 6, while Form 7 is used to object to an entry or seek deletion. Form 8 can be used for corrections or changes in address.

The extended window for claims and objections will close on October 30. Officials have until November 30 to dispose of the applications and objections, while the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on December 4. Booth-level officers are also visiting neighbourhoods to identify eligible people left out of the draft list and help them apply.

Also Read: Iran plots to target US diplomats as Trump threatens strikes: Report

If there is a difference of opinion with someone close to you, try to understand their point of view without feeling that you must agree with everything they say. Traditional values can provide guidance, but your personal circumstances also deserve consideration. Couples may enjoy a relaxed day together or find a reason to celebrate a small achievement. Those who are single may have opportunities to socialise and meet new people through mutual friends, although it is best to let connections develop naturally. Financially, be mindful of spending on outings, celebrations, or spontaneous plans. Enjoy yourself without losing track of your budget. The day also reminds you to appreciate the people who support you, rather than getting caught up in unnecessary comparisons or misunderstandings.

Today's Message: Make time for friendship, celebrate small joys, and surround yourself with people who bring positivity into your life.

Cancer — Four of Swords

For Cancer, Saturday is a reminder that rest is just as important as productivity. The Four of Swords represents recovery, quiet reflection, and the need to step back from demanding situations. If you have been managing multiple responsibilities or dealing with emotional pressure, you may benefit from creating some space for yourself. At work, avoid taking on more than you can reasonably manage. If a task does not require immediate attention, consider organising your priorities instead of trying to complete everything at once. A calm and methodical approach may help you return to your responsibilities with greater clarity.

Financially, use the day to review your plans rather than making impulsive decisions. You may find it helpful to pause before committing to a purchase or a new financial responsibility. In relationships, a little personal space can be healthy, especially if recent conversations have felt overwhelming. Explain your need for rest instead of withdrawing without communicating. Spending quiet time at home, reading, listening to music, or engaging in a relaxing activity may help you feel more balanced. Rest should not be seen as a sign of weakness or laziness; it can be a necessary part of maintaining your energy and emotional well-being.

Today's Message: Give yourself permission to slow down. Rest, reflect, and return to your responsibilities with a clearer mind.

Leo — Ace of Wands

For Leo, Saturday brings a spark of creativity, enthusiasm, and the desire to begin something new. The Ace of Wands represents inspiration, fresh opportunities, and the motivation to turn an idea into action. You may suddenly feel excited about a project, personal goal, hobby, or professional possibility that you have been considering. At work, this is a good time to brainstorm, explore creative approaches, or share an idea that could improve the way something is done. If you have been waiting for motivation to take the first step, you may feel more willing to get started. However, enthusiasm should be supported by a realistic plan so that your initial excitement can develop into sustained progress.

Financially, be careful about investing money in a new idea before understanding the costs involved. An exciting opportunity may deserve attention, but it is still important to consider the practical details. In your personal life, you may feel motivated to organise an outing, begin a new activity, or bring fresh energy into a relationship. Couples can use this enthusiasm to plan something enjoyable together. Those who are single may feel more confident about meeting people or expressing their interest in someone. Let your creativity lead the way, but remember that a promising beginning becomes meaningful through consistent effort.

Today's Message: Follow your inspiration and take the first step, but give your ideas the planning and commitment they need to grow.

Virgo — The Hermit

For Virgo, Saturday is a day for introspection, thoughtful planning, and gaining clarity about your priorities. The Hermit represents inner wisdom, solitude, and the value of taking a step back to understand what truly matters. You may feel less interested in distractions and more inclined to spend time organising your thoughts. At work, reviewing your goals, assessing your progress, or planning the next stage of a project could prove more useful than rushing into something new. If you are facing a difficult decision, allow yourself time to consider the options carefully. You do not need to have every answer immediately.

Financially, this is a suitable time to examine your habits, identify unnecessary expenses, and think about your long-term priorities. Avoid making decisions simply because other people are doing the same thing. In relationships, you may need some quiet time to understand your own feelings. Communicate this need clearly so that people close to you do not mistake it for a lack of interest. A meaningful conversation with a trusted person may also help you gain a different perspective. The Hermit encourages you to listen to your inner voice, but it does not suggest that you must handle every problem alone. Seek support when it is genuinely helpful.

Today's Message: Step back from distractions, reflect on your priorities, and trust the clarity that comes from thoughtful self-examination.

Libra — Justice

For Libra, Saturday highlights fairness, accountability, and the importance of making balanced decisions. The Justice card represents truth, consequences, and the need to consider every side of a situation before reaching a conclusion. At work, you may need to address a misunderstanding, clarify responsibilities, or make a decision that requires objectivity. Rather than allowing personal preferences to influence your judgement, focus on facts and communicate your position clearly. If you are dealing with an agreement, document, or professional commitment, read the details carefully before giving your approval. A fair and organised approach may help prevent unnecessary complications.

Financially, review your commitments and ensure that your spending reflects your priorities. If money is shared with a partner or family member, an honest discussion about expectations may be useful. In personal relationships, the card encourages mutual respect and accountability. If you feel that a situation has been unfair, express your concerns calmly and give the other person an opportunity to explain their perspective. At the same time, be willing to recognise your own role in a disagreement. Maintaining peace does not mean avoiding difficult conversations; it means approaching them with honesty and respect. Aim for solutions that are reasonable for everyone involved.

Today's Message: Be fair to others and yourself. Look at the facts, communicate honestly, and choose balance over impulsive reactions.

Scorpio — The Magician

For Scorpio, Saturday is about recognising your abilities and using them to turn ideas into practical action. The Magician represents resourcefulness, confidence, communication, and the ability to make the most of what is already available to you. At work, you may feel motivated to take charge of a task, develop a proposal, or find a more effective way to solve a problem. Your determination can be an advantage, particularly when a situation requires initiative and clear thinking. If you have been waiting for the perfect moment to begin something, consider whether you already have enough information and resources to take the first step.

Financially, focus on practical opportunities and make sure that your plans are supported by realistic calculations. Avoid promises of quick returns or decisions based purely on excitement. In relationships, honest communication can help you express your needs and understand those of others. If there has been confusion between you and someone close to you, a direct but respectful conversation may help clear the air. The Magician also reminds you to use your influence responsibly. Confidence is valuable, but it should be accompanied by transparency and follow-through. Instead of trying to do everything at once, identify the resources that will make the greatest difference and use them wisely.

Today's Message: Believe in your abilities, use your resources wisely, and turn your intentions into meaningful action.

Sagittarius — The Chariot

For Sagittarius, Saturday brings a sense of direction, determination, and renewed momentum towards personal goals. The Chariot represents discipline, forward movement, and the ability to stay focused despite competing demands. You may feel motivated to make progress on a long-standing ambition, organise a journey, or take a more active role in shaping your future. At work, your ability to remain focused can help you handle demanding responsibilities. If several tasks require your attention, decide which ones matter most and organise your time accordingly. Progress is possible when enthusiasm is combined with a clear strategy.

Travel-related plans may also come into focus. If you are travelling or preparing for a journey, make practical arrangements in advance and allow enough time for unexpected delays. Financially, avoid letting excitement push you into spending more than planned, particularly on travel or personal projects. In relationships, balance your desire for independence with the needs of people who matter to you. Your determination is a strength, but trying to control every outcome may create unnecessary pressure. Be willing to adjust your approach when circumstances change. The card encourages you to move forward with purpose while remaining aware of your surroundings and responsibilities.

Today's Message: Stay focused on your destination, manage your energy wisely, and keep moving forward with discipline and confidence.

Capricorn — Seven of Pentacles

For Capricorn, Saturday emphasises patience, long-term planning, and the importance of evaluating progress before making the next move. The Seven of Pentacles represents investment, perseverance, and the understanding that meaningful results often take time. At work, you may find yourself reviewing the progress of a project or considering whether your current strategy is producing the results you expected. Instead of becoming discouraged because everything has not happened quickly, assess what is working and where adjustments are needed. If you have been putting consistent effort into a professional goal, continue building on that foundation while remaining open to improving your approach.

Financially, the card encourages a thoughtful review of savings, investments, and future expenses. Avoid expecting immediate returns from decisions that require time to develop. Before making a major commitment, consider whether it supports your long-term plans. In personal relationships, patience may be equally important. Strong connections are built through trust, communication, and repeated acts of care rather than dramatic gestures alone. If you feel that your efforts are not being recognised, express your concerns instead of allowing frustration to build. Take stock of how far you have come, acknowledge your progress, and identify the areas where further effort is needed.

Today's Message: Be patient with your progress. Review your efforts, make adjustments where necessary, and give worthwhile goals the time they need.

Aquarius — Page of Swords

For Aquarius, Saturday encourages curiosity, learning, and a willingness to explore new ideas. The Page of Swords represents intellectual energy, observation, communication, and the desire to understand how things work. At work, you may discover useful information, come across a new perspective, or feel motivated to develop a skill. Asking questions and researching a topic thoroughly could help you make more informed decisions. If you are working on a presentation, proposal, or creative project, pay attention to the details and make sure your information is accurate. Your curiosity can open new doors, provided you combine it with patience and careful analysis.

Financially, research any product, service, or opportunity before committing your money. Do not rely entirely on rumours, unverified claims, or information shared casually by others. In relationships, thoughtful communication will be important. You may feel inclined to ask questions or clarify something that has been bothering you. Do so with genuine curiosity rather than suspicion, and avoid drawing conclusions before you have the full picture. On social media or in group conversations, think carefully before sharing information or reacting to something that catches your attention. The card encourages you to remain open-minded while recognising the difference between interesting information and reliable facts.

Today's Message: Stay curious, keep learning, and verify information before turning it into an opinion or decision.

Pisces — Queen of Cups

For Pisces, Saturday highlights compassion, emotional understanding, and the importance of listening to your intuition while remaining grounded. The Queen of Cups represents empathy, sensitivity, emotional maturity, and supportive relationships. You may find yourself more aware of the feelings of people around you, making this a useful time to offer support or have a meaningful conversation with someone close. In your personal life, patience and understanding can help strengthen relationships. If a loved one is going through a difficult time, listening without immediately trying to solve every problem may be the most helpful response. At the same time, remember that being supportive does not mean taking responsibility for everyone's emotions.

At work, your ability to understand different perspectives may help you handle teamwork or sensitive discussions with care. However, avoid allowing emotions alone to determine important professional decisions. Combine your intuition with facts and practical thinking. Financially, be mindful of spending money out of sympathy, guilt, or a desire to please someone. Set healthy boundaries where needed. If you have been emotionally overwhelmed, consider making time for activities that help you feel calm and centred. A peaceful conversation, creative pursuit, or quiet moment for reflection may help you reconnect with yourself. Trust your feelings, but give yourself enough space to understand them before acting.

Today's Message: Lead with compassion, listen to your intuition, and protect your emotional well-being while caring for others.

Today's Overall Tarot Message

The tarot cards for 24 October 2026 highlight the importance of patience, thoughtful action, and emotional balance.

The broader message of the day is to recognise that progress does not always require dramatic action. Sometimes it comes from maintaining a routine, listening carefully, taking a break, or making one thoughtful decision at a time.

Affirmation for the Day: “I move forward with patience, clarity, and confidence. I respect my own needs, value meaningful connections, and trust myself to make thoughtful choices.”

Sometimes it’s just a single quote; we hold onto these small comforts to help us get through days that feel especially heavy. Life has its ups and downs, and each day can be a mix of both. Today, I want to share a dialogue from one of my favourite survival drama films, something that can bring a little warmth, even on your hardest days.

Dialogue of the day

"I gotta keep breathing. Who knows what the tide can bring?" — Cast Away

This iconic line was delivered by legendary actor Tom Hanks, who portrays Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems analyst stranded on a deserted island after a devastating plane crash.

This powerful line from the survival drama gently reminds us that no matter how dark or overwhelming our circumstances feel, survival simply begins with taking the next breath. Life can isolate us in unexpected ways, but as long as we keep holding on, tomorrow always brings a fresh start and unknown possibilities. It encourages us to trust that better days and unexpected hope are always within reach, even when we feel entirely cut off from the world.

After spending years alone on the island, facing total isolation, physical exhaustion, and losing hope of rescue, Chuck shares these words as a profound reflection on how he survived his darkest moments. He realized that giving up was not an option because life's tide can unexpectedly shift when you least expect it. And in many ways, it’s not just meant for a stranded survivor; it speaks to all of us as everyday people navigating our own personal storms.

Life is meant to unfold gradually, each day bringing a new wave, even if it feels terrifying or uncertain at first. But 'this too shall pass,' just like the reminder that as long as you keep breathing, the sun will always rise again. Whenever you feel low, try to pause, breathe, and look toward a brighter side.

Just like how the tide continues to turn, look up and remind yourself how resilient you are, that you’re here, present, and capable of enduring these heavy seasons until a new wave brings hope back into your life.

About 'Cast Away'

Cast Away (2000) is a timeless drama directed by Robert Zemeckis that thoughtfully explores human endurance, isolation, mental resilience, and the unyielding will to survive against impossible odds. The story follows Chuck Noland, a hyper-efficient corporate strategist obsessed with time, whose life is completely upended when his plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Stranded alone on a remote, uninhabited island for over four years, Chuck is forced to adapt physically and emotionally to absolute solitude, learning to find hope and purpose in the simple act of staying alive day by day.

Today’s inspiring line from Cast Away, spoken by Tom Hanks, serves as a powerful reminder to keep pushing forward through lifes hardest moments because every new day brings fresh hope and unexpected possibilities.

Horoscope today, October 24: Taurus, don't treat kindness as a transaction

A research report presented at the European Geosciences Union has raised concerns about tectonic activity beneath the Himalayas, warning that energy accumulating beneath a 115-kilometre stretch of Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region could trigger a powerful earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale. The potential impact, according to the assessment discussed in the report, could extend beyond Uttarakhand to Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

In today’s episode of DNA, Rahul Sinha, Managing Editor of Zee News, conducted a detailed analysis.

What is happening beneath the Himalayas?

The research examined the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Himalayan region. According to the report, movement along a stretch of the Himalayas in Kumaon, Uttarakhand, has become obstructed, a process known in geology as plate locking. The report warns that this could cause energy to accumulate beneath the Earth’s surface, raising concerns about the possibility of a major earthquake if that energy is released suddenly.

The analysis highlighted an approximately 115-kilometre-long section of Uttarakhand where this process is believed to be occurring. Researchers have warned that the accumulated energy could be equivalent to that built up within a tectonic plate over 100 years.

Tectonic plates are sections of the Earth’s outer layer that move continuously, generally at a rate comparable to the growth of a fingernail. They typically move by around 1 to 4 centimetres a year. Plate locking occurs when two plates become stuck against each other, preventing their movement. When accumulated stress is released suddenly, it can cause the ground to shake and trigger an earthquake.

The report also cites satellite-image analysis indicating that tectonic plate movement beneath the Himalayas has slowed by 18 millimetres per year compared with the average rate. Meanwhile, the plates are rising at a rate of 4 to 6 millimetres annually, suggesting that the elevation of the Himalayan surface could increase in the coming years.

How could an Earthquake affect Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh And Delhi?

The assessment presented in the DNA analysis outlines a possible sequence of impacts if a major earthquake strikes the Kumaon region.

Pithoragarh and Nainital could experience tremors within 10 seconds. The analysis warns of possible building collapses, major landslides and forest fires in these areas.

The tremors could then reach Haldwani, Bareilly and Moradabad within 20 to 25 seconds. Buildings could sustain damage, while bridges and roads could develop major cracks. Underground pipelines could also be damaged or destroyed.

Delhi could experience the tremors approximately 90 seconds, or a minute and a half, after the earthquake begins in Kumaon. Although the shaking could weaken by the time it reaches the national capital, the assessment warns that some areas could still face significant damage.

Areas built along the Yamuna floodplains could be particularly vulnerable, with roofs potentially collapsing and the foundations of high-rise buildings sustaining damage. Delhi’s dense population could also make rescue and relief operations more difficult.

The analysis further states that even if an earthquake measuring 8.1 in Uttarakhand weakened before reaching Delhi, its magnitude could still exceed 6 on the Richter scale.

Assessment warns of damage to buildings and economic losses

According to the estimates presented in the programme, 38 per cent of Delhi’s buildings could be at risk in such a scenario. Around 34 lakh houses and factories could suffer extensive damage.

The projected human and economic toll could also be substantial. The assessment estimates that an earthquake of this magnitude could cause between 10,000 and 11,000 deaths in Delhi and neighbouring areas, with economic losses potentially reaching Rs 8.5 lakh crore.

These figures are projections discussed in the analysis, not confirmed outcomes. The programme also cautioned that the actual scale of damage could be greater if a major earthquake struck Uttarakhand and Delhi.

India’s history of major earthquakes

The analysis referred to some of the most devastating earthquakes in independent India’s history to underline the potential consequences of a high-magnitude event.

In 1950, an earthquake measuring 8.6 struck Assam, killing approximately 3,300 people.
By Girish Linganna

For months, villagers in the high valleys of Arunachal Pradesh whispered that their herders could no longer walk the old grazing paths near the border. Social media carried louder claims. Officialdom stayed quiet. That silence broke when Shatrujeet Kapur, Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, told an annual ceremony honouring his personnel that Indian and Chinese soldiers have been locked in tense face-offs at several points in Arunachal Pradesh since July, and that the stand-off was still on. It was the first time anyone in authority had confirmed it.

The trouble began around Taksing, a remote pocket close to Tibet. Reports said People's Liberation Army troops were blocking Indian patrols from reaching their patrolling points, the fixed spots soldiers walk to regularly to show the land is theirs, along the Line of Actual Control, or LAC, the unofficial border marking where each side currently stands because the two countries have never agreed on a formal boundary. The timing is awkward. The confrontations evidently continued even while Chinese President Xi Jinping was in New Delhi for the September BRICS Summit, a gathering of leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and even as top Army generals from both sides held their first formal peace meeting in the Arunachal sector.

Kapur, however, chose to speak of pride rather than alarm. He singled out the newly raised Shaurya commandos, an elite ITBP unit trained to fight at heights where the air is so thin that every breath is an effort and ordinary soldiers tire within minutes, for holding their ground admirably. He reminded listeners that the ITBP, born in 1962 in the shadow of war, was conceived as a mountain-fighting force working in small teams with surprise moves, and was handed the entire 3,488-km China frontier only in 2004. That frontier, he admitted, remains its hardest posting. Every border unit now has a drone team, underground shelters are being dug, and a new course called Strike, which teaches soldiers to survive and win the kind of hand-to-hand brawl seen at Galwan, will cover every ITBP member by the end of 2027.

Galwan is the memory behind all this. In June 2020, in Ladakh, Chinese troops attacked Indian soldiers with stones, nail-studded sticks, iron rods and clubs. Twenty Indian soldiers died. China admitted to four of its own, though many accounts put its losses far higher.

Kapur also spoke bluntly about drones, calling them both a danger and a gift. Matching China weapon for weapon is hard because Beijing has spent lavishly modernising the PLA. But a drone the size of a suitcase lets even a small country trouble a giant; it can watch enemy movements, collect intelligence and strike. India, he said, must use far more drones and far more anti-drone systems, the devices that spot, jam or shoot down hostile machines.

A serious shield works in layers, like a house with a boundary wall, a locked gate and an alarm. First, radars, special cameras and electronic sensors to catch drones too small for the eye. Second, jammers that scramble a drone's radio link and interceptors that physically stop it. Third, artificial intelligence that tells a drone from a bird and warns troops faster. Fourth, Indian-made drones and counter-drone gear, so spare parts never depend on a foreign supplier during a crisis. Fifth, routine training so soldiers know when to take cover and whom to call. Sixth, hardened shelters and early warning for posts, ammunition dumps and communication hubs. Seventh, reliable communication across deep valleys and brutal weather. Eighth, DRDO, research institutes and private firms building affordable kit that survives extreme cold and altitude. No single tool suffices, because some newer drones do not need constant radio signals, so ordinary jammers cannot stop them.

The politics has been fierce. In July a team from the People's Party of Arunachal, which has two MLAs, reported the Taksing blockade and rising Chinese activity in Upper Subansiri district. The government rejected the claims and reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is and will remain an inseparable part of India. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju told India Today that China had seized no new ground, while acknowledging that local worries over lost grazing access were genuine. Congress demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. On X, Jairam Ramesh mockingly called Modi "Vishwaguru" (world teacher), accused him of calculated compromises with China, asked what the September generals' talks had achieved, and pointed to Ladakh-style loss of patrolling points, Beijing's renaming of Arunachal towns, and a 60,000 MW Chinese dam he said threatens India's water security.

Official sources counter that no land is quietly changing hands. They recall that China, which calls Tibet Xizang and Arunachal Zangnan or South Tibet, claimed some 69,000 sq km during the 1960 boundary talks; that it attacked an Assam Rifles post at Longju in 1959 and has held and built upon that patch since; and that its 1962 offensives through Kameng, Subansiri, Siyom, Siang and Lohit ended with the PLA pulling back north of the LAC. Better roads now let Indian patrols go further, which is partly why soldiers meet more often, and such meetings, the sources insist, are usually settled through the existing border agreements and talks between officials. Last week India answered China's naming game by placing 27 Arunachal mountains, rivers and landmarks on its official map under their Indian names.\

Doklam and eastern Ladakh taught the country that these contests are long and lonely for the men who stand in them. Relations with Beijing have warmed of late. Whether that warmth reaches the frozen patrol tracks of Taksing is the question every family with a son on that line is quietly asking.

(Girish Linganna is an award-winning science communicator and a defence, aerospace and geopolitical analyst.
Pratika Rawal struck an unbeaten century while Shafali Verma smashed a blistering 64 not out as World Champions India cruised to a nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe, chasing down a target of 198 in just 27.1 overs in the first ODI of the three-match series at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi in Vadodara on Friday.

Rawal remained unbeaten on 100 off 96 balls, hitting 15 boundaries, while Shafali provided the fireworks with an unbeaten 64 off just 34 deliveries, including five fours and four sixes. The emphatic victory came after India’s bowlers, led by Shree Charani’s four-wicket haul, restricted Zimbabwe to 197 in 49.5 overs despite a fighting half-century from Beloved Biza.

Chasing 198, India made a flying start as Rawal struck two boundaries in the opening over to put the Zimbabwe bowlers under immediate pressure. The opener continued her aggressive approach, finding two more boundaries across the next two overs while rotating the strike effectively.

Captain Smriti Mandhana joined the assault in the fifth over, hammering consecutive fours off Michelle Mavunga as the Indian openers took advantage of the fielding restrictions.

Rawal was particularly proactive during the Powerplay, combining crisp strokeplay with effective running between the wickets. The opening pair dominated the Zimbabwe attack, taking India to 72 without loss after 10 overs, with Rawal contributing 42 runs during that period. India needed just 126 more runs to secure victory.

With the fielding restrictions lifted, Rawal and Mandhana initially adapted a more measured approach, looking to keep the scoreboard moving through singles and twos. Rawal received a reprieve in the 13th over when Loryn Phiri dropped her at deep mid-wicket.

The opener capitalised on the opportunity, completing her fourth ODI half-century off 54 balls. Another boundary in the 15th over helped India move to 93 without loss as the opening partnership continued to put Zimbabwe on the back foot.

Zimbabwe finally broke through in the 16th over when Mandhana attempted to attack a delivery outside the off stump but was dismissed. The Indian captain scored 32 off 34 balls, ending the opening partnership after a strong start.

However, the dismissal did little to slow India’s progress, as Shafali joined Rawal in the middle and immediately made her intentions clear with a boundary off her third delivery.

The two batters maintained a scoring rate of around eight runs per over, putting the visitors under mounting pressure. Rawal continued to anchor the chase with assured strokeplay, while Shafali attacked the bowlers with her trademark aggression.

India reached 166/1 at the halfway stage of the innings, leaving Zimbabwe with little room to stage a comeback.

Shafali accelerated further in the 26th over, taking the bowlers apart and bringing up her half-century off just 29 balls with consecutive sixes as India moved within touching distance of the target.

Rawal, who had been in control from the beginning, reached her century off 96 deliveries in the 27th over to cap a dominant individual performance.

Shafali then completed the chase in style, striking a boundary off the first ball of the 28th over. She remained unbeaten on 64 off 34 balls, with five fours and four sixes, as India finished at 198/2 in 27.1 overs. Olinder Chare was the only Zimbabwe bowler to take a wicket, finishing with figures of 1/58.

Earlier, India produced a disciplined bowling performance to dismiss Zimbabwe for 197 in 49.5 overs after the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.

Zimbabwe suffered an early setback when opener Loryn Phiri was caught and bowled by Kranti Gaud in the third over.

Mugeri-Tiripano and Modester Mupachikwa attempted to rebuild the innings, rotating the strike and capitalising on loose deliveries. Zimbabwe reached 46/1 at the end of the powerplay.

After the fielding restrictions were lifted, Captain Mandhana introduced Charani, who trapped Mugeri-Tiripano's leg before the wicket for 21 off 27 balls. The spinner struck again in the 15th over, dismissing Mupachikwa, who mistimed a lofted shot and was caught by Gaud for 25 off 44 deliveries.

Deepti added to Zimbabwe’s troubles in the 18th over by dismissing newly appointed vice-captain Sharne Mayers. Attempting to play an aerial shot against a tossed-up delivery, Mayers failed to clear the infield and departed for eight off 12 balls.

Zimbabwe was in need of a substantial partnership when Biza and Nyasha Gwanzura came together. The duo rotated the strike effectively and found boundaries at regular intervals to rebuild the innings, taking the visitors past the 100-run mark in the 26th over.

Charani broke the partnership in the first over of her third spell, taking a return catch to dismiss Gwanzura for 13 off 28 balls.

Biza continued to hold the innings together and found support in Chiedza Dhururu. The pair attempted to revive Zimbabwe’s scoring rate, with Biza reaching her half-century in the 35th over off 64 balls.

India struck again when Gaud bowled Dhururu for 10 off 23 deliveries, leaving Zimbabwe searching for another partnership.

Mavunga, batting at No. 8, provided some late impetus with an aggressive innings. Her boundaries helped Zimbabwe cross the 160-run mark in the 39th over, but Charani ended her resistance in the 43rd over to complete her four-wicket haul. Mavunga scored 29 off 23 balls.

Biza remained the visitors’ top scorer, but her fighting innings ended when Gaud dismissed her, with Mandhana taking a good catch. Biza made 62 off 92 balls, striking four boundaries.

Deepti wrapped up the innings by bowling Tendai Makusha off the penultimate ball as Zimbabwe were dismissed for 197 in 49.5 overs.

Brief scores:

Zimbabwe Women 197 all out in 49.5 overs (Beloved Biza 62, Michelle Mavunga 29; Shree Charani 4-23, Kranti Gaud 3-42) lost to India Women 200/1 in 27.1 overs (Pratika Rawal 100*, Shafali Verma 64*, Smriti Mandhana 32; Olinder Chare 1-58) by 9 wickets.

Pratika Rawal smashed an unbeaten century while Shafali Verma scored a rapid 64 not out as India Women thrashed Zimbabwe by nine wickets in the first ODI in Vadodara. Shree Charani claimed four wickets to help bowl Zimbabwe out for 197 before India chased down the target in just 27.1 overs.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said the situation along the India-China border gets disturbed when Chinese forces deviate from established patrolling patterns, stressing that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations.

The clarification came amid a political row over reported remarks by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapoor about continuing face-offs with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in Arunachal Pradesh. Instead of attacking the Opposition, PM Modi must take Parliament and the Nation into confidence," Kharge said.

He called on the Prime Minister to address Parliament and explain the government's position on the reported border developments.

India, China Agree To Address Border Issues Through Existing Channels

The MEA's remarks come as India and China continue diplomatic efforts to manage tensions along the LAC and prevent further misunderstandings.

On August 25, the two countries held the 25th round of talks between their Special Representatives on the boundary question in Beijing. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to follow the guidance of their respective leaders, maintain peace and tranquillity along the border and create conditions for the steady development of bilateral relations.

They also reiterated their commitment to negotiations on a framework for settling the boundary question in line with the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of the India-China Boundary Question.

The two sides agreed to pursue a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution and address ground-level situations promptly through existing diplomatic and military channels. These include the WMCC, local commander-level meetings and other agreed mechanisms aimed at resolving outstanding issues and avoiding misunderstandings or miscalculations along the LAC.

MEA Reiterates India's Position On Ladakh

Separately, the MEA last week reiterated that the Union Territory of Ladakh is an "integral and inalienable part of India", stating that no denial by China could change this established fact.

The statement followed objections by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on October 13 to India's decision to identify 28 places and geographical features in Ladakh using standard names on the official Survey of India map. Beijing described the move as "illegal and void".

The MEA referred to a Ministry of Home Affairs announcement stating that the locations had been identified in consultation with the Ladakh administration and local stakeholders. The exercise aims to ensure accurate recognition of the places and improve public awareness of their geographical locations.

Earlier this month, the Centre announced the identification of the 28 places and features on the official map.

Jaishankar Says Border Situation Will Shape Future Of India-China Ties

In September, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said relations between India and China had improved from the lows reached during the prolonged border stand-off, but cautioned that the situation along the frontier would remain a key factor in determining the extent to which ties could be normalised.

During his visit to New York, Jaishankar said bilateral relations were in a better position than in 2025 and had improved further compared with 2024. However, he warned against viewing the recovery as a fundamental shift in the relationship.

"I don't think it's structural change so much as a recovery from how far ties had deteriorated," he said.

The 2020 border developments and the prolonged stand-off had severely affected normal contact between the two countries. While trade continued, official exchanges, visa services and flights were disrupted. As tensions eased, some of these contacts gradually resumed.

Jaishankar described the improvement as a result of stabilisation rather than proof that the underlying differences had been resolved.

"A dip in our relationship actually doesn't help either of us," he said, adding that third parties could benefit from strained ties between the two countries.

In September, Modi met Xi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The two leaders stressed that "differences should not become disputes" and reaffirmed the need to take a strategic and long-term view of bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Modi underlined that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remained essential for the continued development of ties between India and China.

(With agencies' inputs)

The clarification came amid a political row over reported remarks by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapoor about continuing face-offs with the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) in Arunachal Pradesh.
